1979 Royal Sierra Camper Special

Hi just joined the site last night. This is my first GM truck a few months ago, and someone told me it may be a little rare. In fact, I wasnt particularly looking for a GM, I like the mid/late 70's Power Rams, but when I saw this truck I decided to buy it because the body/drivetrain was in great condition for the asking price. Ive done some searching on this site, and all I could find was that Royal Sierra was a trim level, not a performance package.. and Id like to get more info about it. It also says camper special 8400gvw on the cab as well. It has a 350cid, TH400, NP203, 14bolt rear, 10bolt front. Did they make royal sierra camper specials? The truck is in such good shape and it doesnt look like any body pieces have ever been swapped or replaced

Good looking truck! The Royal Sierra is the equivalent to the bonanza. End of the year promotion trucks. You could get upper level options at a discounted price.

Re: 1979 Royal Sierra Camper Special

Correct - it's a trim level, not affecting performance options.

I know you can do this for Chevy; I assume it's the same for GMC: if you send your VIN and $50 to the GM Heritage Center they can send you the actual invoice (RPOs and pricing) for your specific truck.

Wouldn't hurt to ask, anyway.

just confirmed my engine is #'s matching, which might not mean much in a 79 pickup, but cool none the less

Re: 1979 Royal Sierra Camper Special

cordova brown and sante fe tan, my favorite. in the truck world, numbers matching doesnt mean much. the royal sieras and bonanzas are cool, no beau james and gentleman jim though. theres allot to learn. so much that you can bore you friends to death telling them about your truck. http://www.73-87.com/

Re: 1979 Royal Sierra Camper Special

Very very nice truck. Numbers matching means a lot. It means you got an unmolested original truck,or at least whoever owned it all these years cared enough to replace the engine with one with correct numbers. That means a lot to me. I'm an enthusiast, not an investor
