Great day with the 58

Wow today was one of those rare days where I got alot done without too much drama. A very rare day. Put together my vent window assembly and set the door glass in its frame, totally rebuilt the turnsignal assembly and added new switch (in anticipation of the re-wire), and put the deluxe cab trim on. A good day.

THanks guys. Yeah she usually fights me a bit but today alot of things fell together. My windows were awful and flopping around, rattling, a mess. Had to use a blowtorch to get the old petrified weatherstripping out. Hoping for a nicer ride. I also put the original rims and caps on the truck today. Im partial to the original wheels and caps. You guys like em? I even put my boys to work to polish the caps. LOL

Hey Daze, sure. I bought the car from a guy in California and he went for a two tone interior with white pleated inserts. Not really my cup of tea, but is prett clean. THere is some molestation in the radio area (you can see it in the turnsignal pic) that I will repair in a few weeks and then paint the lower half of the dash white. I do like the idea of a red and white two tone dash, kinda like you see in Cameo's.

Love them but may I suggest they'd look even better with the old school ribbed beauty rings to really set them off?

As for your radio problem, I know these are not an era-correct radio but they have a lot of chrome or black bezels that could help you mask that cut out.

Liking your truck. I would be interested to know how to hook up the turn signals to the wiring harness. I have a factory turn signal set up to install, but I don't know the routing and wiring. I am guessing the wires for the turn signals go inside the steering "tube" and out a small opening under the steering support at the dash. From there I am lost.

BTW I like your truck! Nice looking. I am a sucker for those factory hub caps. I've got two sets non chrome though.

Wish I could help you on the wiring but I'm going with a new style column with everything in it already.
I would think you have the right idea on how to do it by what you wrote though.

Nice looking truck. Yes, the hub caps look good. Even a set of late model trim rings would add that extra touch the wheels need.

After the turn signal wiring comes out of the column it's held under the dash by a little metal clip just above the column. The end of the wires are separated shortly after that and they connect to individual wires in the the under dash harness.

Guess I will need to get a turn signal wiring harness some where. I will also try to look through the Assembly Manual for routing info.

Stock caps are cool and ok with me. Wheels that run the 59 caps will not fit over my discs, so 67-72 truck caps are the closest. I am using beauty rings too. Most people will think they are stock.

That is one nice looking truck all around. The color is right on in my book. You are making me feel like a slacker as I'm not getting much done on my truck due to having to work outside and it's cold out there.

Very nice truck. I also like the caps. I have a 58 Suburban with what I think are stock wheels. Would like to paint the rims and get wide whites. Not sure if the rims I have are big enough. Your tires look bigger. What size rim and tire is that? Are all the rims the same width for 58?

You truck is really nice, I agree with all and like the stock wheels and hubcaps. I am building a 58 stepside with patina look and door sign for shop that I am in need of a set of stock painted with some rust to finish the look. Wide whites and black wheels with rusted caps. Any ideas?

Nice job, any tips on putting the deluxe trim back on the cab/doors? Did you use factory or aftermarket clips?

Hey guys thanks for the kind words. Yeah I love the 58 bodystyle. Dig them 4-eyes! Ive owned several of these old trucks and I must say this one is special.

The deluxe trim was a real pain. I ordered the trim from Classic Parts and I must say the trim itself is really nice and a fairly accurate reproduction. I have another thread on this topic if you are interested in more details. Basically you cant use the clips that came with the trim, they dont work and dont make a tight fit. You have to order the separate trim clip kit which is still not 100% accurate or correct but they will work. The wire used to make them is heavier than original, so you have to be careful when pushing the trim on or you will get little dimples in the trim at the attachment sites. I got a few but theyre not bad. You should a paint stiring stick to press against the trim to help avoid this. Truck sure looks alot better with the trim though!
