Paint ?

Trying again... Questions about getting truck painted
Thinking about a paint job for the truck in my signature... Questions...

1. Budget... In my mind I am thinking that with the minimal bodywork I think I need, and the fact that I am not doing a color change or looking for a show quality job, my budget should be around 3500. Agree? I do want quality work, without a bunch of overspray, etc...

2. Time frame... This one really bothers me... Too many stories about cars spending the better part of a year waiting for body and paint. I am not looking for a one day, in by 9 out by 5 crap deal, but is it reasonable to expect to get the truck done in a month?

I my area one day paint and body is not all that bad.

Especially if you take the time, and prep the car or truck. By removing anything paint should not be on, and cleaning all the grease off of it.

I was able to complete the restoration from May to September - largely because I found a local body shop that would turn it around in 1 week.

I did all the prep work; removed the box and took them the cab/fenders. They shot it and got it back to me in one week.

Later in the summer I took them just the box (and drove it with no box during that time). They got that back to me within a week as well.

Total cost was $3200, for the original color (Apple Red) in base coat/clear.

All of that is reasonable. A good looking finished product is all in the prep. If you do enough prep 500 cheapo paint will come out to show quality
The quality of the paint determines how long it lasts.

If you're just looking for a quick clean "driver" quality job take a look at Maaco. If you have one locally check out their work, see if it fits your desire. I have a couple friends with Maaco jobs on their hot rods, you'd be hard pressed to find flaws in the paint.

Automotive paint and supply prices have gone to the moon. Materials alone for some jobs could run into the 4 digit range for a base/clear paint job.

I do it for a living. Each vehicle varies obviously due to the amount of work involved to get it "paint ready".

If you do alot of the disassembly and prep work before hand it will help to keep some costs down. If it's overall a pretty solid and straight truck, I don't think you'll have too much trouble finding someone to paint it for the budget you allowed yourself.

Hit some shows, talk to some locals and see who is in your area that does quality work. Look at others cars and judge for yourself is probably the best way to find someone in your area.
