Calling all Colorado users!
I'm moving to Evergreen this summer and I would like to bring my 82' square. I know Colorado has strict emission laws. How are you guys dealing with this? Would I need to register it as an antique (if it's even possible)? Are there any "custom car" exemptions? I really don't want to sell the thing. My pops is bringing along he '36 Ford and '36 Chevy PU and I know these cars don't require emission tests.

Move to or become friends with someone who lives in a non emission county. I think they changed the law a couple years ago, used to be able to register as classic and only have to pass smog once, now with collector plates you still have to have it tested every 5 years. I moved to elbert county a couple years ago so I havent paid much attention to the new law but I think that I'm right.

Can only put collector plates on something that is 1975 or older. Used to be 25 years, but they changed it a few years ago. With collector plates you don't have to take an emissions test but unfortunately that's not an option on your truck. Good luck Evergreen is a beautiful area.

Re: Calling all Colorado users!
The emissions laws aren't that tough on an 82. If I remember right they have to pass at the standards for the year of manufacture, not todays. Visual inspection means you got to have all the emissions stuff there for what it would have been equipped with. Back then, cat/convertor, pcv, evaporative system and possibly air pump. Evergreen is part of Jefferson county which is part of the front range that requires testing.
A good running, well tuned engine can easily pass emissions. Heck I could get my 2 quart a week oil burning 307 to pass in my Nova at the 1969 standard. It can be done. Registering it in another county is an option, but careful if you happen to get pulled over by the police for anything and your address on your licence and registration differ. They tend to frown on that kind of thing.

No emission testing down here either. The only part of CO that does emissions testing is Denexasforina, also known as the greater Denver area where CO natives are less than 50% of the overpopulation there.

Re: Calling all Colorado users!
The emissions area is basically the Denver metro area and north (Loveland, Fort Collins, Greeley, etc). I live in northern Colorado and we used to not have to pass the stupid emissions test, but that changed a few years ago. I'm starting to hate this state.

Re: Calling all Colorado users!
I agree with what DiryLarry and noco-K5 said. I am one of the ex-Californians and moving here was great to get away from the California do-gooders.
I live in a Denver suburb and it is still not too bad. The non-antique cars still get inspected every couple years and really just need to have all their smog stuff in-place and pass the test which is not too tough. Luckily, bought my 77 C20 a few years ago and got the collector car plates!!! |
