Changing instrument cluster in '66

I'm wanting to change out my 66's instrument cluster from the dummy lights to one with actual gauges.
I did a search but couldnt really find what i was looking for.
Do i need different sending units for oil and temp or could i just wire everything in as a direct swap?
I'm thinking of robbing the one out of my '65 since its handy and nearby

You need to swap the sensors for proper sending units. The old ones just switch the lights on and off. I'd like to do that cluster swap sometime, too (with a clock and a tach, of course!).

The '65 cluster will pop right in but you need a different temp unit and the oil sender in the gauges setup uses an oil pressure line not a sensor. Your wiring is different as well. I ended up changing out my engine harness as well as the cluster wiring. It is not a straight swap. It can be done without changing the harnesses but it is not easy.

Thanks!
I'm thinking of diving in on it this weekend.
Just wanted to make sure it wasn't going to be more than I bargained for.

Re: Changing instrument cluster in '66

I did the same swap into my '64.

The gauge cluster came with the cluster wiring harness stuck to it. I just plugged it into the underdash harness where the old cluster was plugged in, and I was surprised to see the dash lights, signal lights and fuel gauge worked.

I ran some plastic tubing for the oil pressure gauge.

VetteVet schooled me on hooking up the temp gauge, and i'm still in the process of getting the temp gauge sorted. This thread has the info on it:

You're lucky; iirc, the temp sender for gauge is cheaper than the one for lights! Hope I remember that right--I had expected the opposite when I was changing mine.

Hey Sam, do you recall where you got the temp sender? Lectric Limited wants $25 for the gauge and $18 to ship it to Canada.

Dracko, iirc, I got it at Advance Auto Parts. I just looked it up, and ADVANCE AP is correct, their part #: WT203P. Gotta love that price!
Again, you must have been living right
