Voltage gauge inop

My volt gauge is at centerline and does not move. Does anyone have any pointers on how to test or repair it?

Re: Voltage gauge inop

if it is the stock gauge it is an ammeter. It has two fuses one on each side of the front. They are 4 amp. One on the drivers side is in the corner of fender and rad support and look like tiny black footballs pull apart fuse is inside. Pass side is off the junction block by battery and looks the same. This is what you start with it's usually the problem.

Re: Voltage gauge inop

^^ Agreed. And it may be working correctly. It normally stays centered. If you watch closely, when you engage the starter it may move slightly to the left indicating battery discharge.... than after the truck starts it may move slightly to the right, indicating a charging condition.

Here's a thread that helps explain the wiring and fuses. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=556345

Sweet. I just need a place to start looking.

Re: Voltage gauge inop

The gauge is actually an ammeter. It shows, to be basic, flow in and out of the battery. During normal operation low to no charge or discharge it tends to the middle. When a load is applied (like starting) it will tend left showing a discharge. When the alternator is catching up, topping off the battery it will tend right. As the battery gets full and the regulator tapers down it will tend to center again.

To restore function. The first place to start is with the two inline 4A fuses in the front end harness. One is over on the right side by the battery junction block. The other is over on the left near about the regulator. If these are good then there is probably an open somewhere. A look through the factory service manual wiring schematics will show what to look for.
