Smile i saw the post about headers and i'm sick of mine

What exhaust manifold would I get I have a 69 with a 1976 305 in it. I just swapped in new header gaskets and it was a pain. I noticed that my sparkplug on drivers side is against them. If I wanna change plugs gonna have to pull header. How stupid. It also depends on cost. Might have to keep what I have for awhile? Just thinking.

My 72 has a 305 from an '86 and it has the ram horn manifolds. Probably find a used set pretty cheap at a junkyard.

Re: i saw the post about headers and i'm sick of mine

Is there any difference in a 72 or 86 exhuast manifolds? Are they cubic inch specific or will ones off a 350 or any small block Chevy work?

These were the 72 manifolds off a 350 and they bolt up just fine.

One of the many reason's I'm getting rid of my headers is that I have to crawl underneath and use an open-end wrench to change my number 2 plug.

Any from a SB should work fine. There are MANY MANY different ones out there. Used are a dime a dozen but new ones arent to bad. The Ramhorns are cool that jjhare spoke about. I wish you were closer because I have probaly 20 different pairs of stock manifolds. Yeah Im kinda a horder If you buy used look them over well and make sure they are not craked. The truck style with the spreader bars are a good way to go also. Just my opinion

They make spark plugs that are shorter than normal for this exact reason. Not sure what brand the are but they showed them on horsepower tv last week.

Re: i saw the post about headers and i'm sick of mine

I have a set of headmens on my truck and then I stuck in a set of short plugs (Accels) so I have more clearance on the plug wires. But even before that the plugs were not to hard to change out.
Now my Nova is right tight thats for sure.

I've used the shorty plugs from Accel, but the header tube is still in front of it; I can't get a socket on it.

Not all manifolds from small blocks will fit a 67-72 truck. The ones that run below the spark plugs tend to interfere with the frame and engine mount stands. The ram horn manifolds run up over the plugs and have a center dump to clear the stands and crossmember and frame. You need the angled exit ram horns on a 2 wd and a straight down exit can be used on a 4 wd application.

As Boog said the center dump (strait down) are for the 4X4's, and the angled back are for the 2wd's. The later style are a "log" type. I diddn't know they would interfere with the frame. You wouldn't want those over the ram horns anyway. The ram horns will bolt up to at least all 86 and prior SBC heads.

Sanderson has cast headers that offer the best of both worlds. Plus you can often find them cheap used.
