twin gas tanks on 86 shortbox

About to land here in Australia my 86 silverado and just want to understand how the twin tank set up works. In the photos I have seen the switch has LH/RH marked on the toggle switch butnot on mine .If you are driving along on either tank and the gauge shows near empty and then you switch does the gauge then indicate the fuel level in the tank you switched to or is it averaging it out?

Re: twin gas tanks on 86 shortbox

If one tank is near empty and you switch to the other it shows that tanks amount. Down should be driver side and up is passenger side
