I'm ashamed to ask this but...
How do you swap an engine in a K20? Do you have to pull the transmission and transfer case out and then yank the motor or can the trans and T-case just be unbolted and slid back somehow? I've R&R'd the engine several times in my cars but never in a truck and and this SM465 and NP205 weigh a bunch more than a muncie. How do you guys prefer to do it?

i just remove the bolts on the bellhousing and just pull the engine. thats the way i have done it with small blocks, big blocks mt favorite engines to work on, straight 6's

Assuming that they don't need any work, I leave the transmission/transfercase in place. It is much easier to remove the engine, leaving them in place.

Thing about a standard is you have to lift the engine high enough to clear the mounts and slide it forward to get the in put shaft out of the clutch disc and pressure plate. I have unbolted the pressure plate if it has an inspection cover so that I only have to move it forward enough to get it out of the pilot bushing. I have also removed the mounts from the block to get enough room to move it forward. Depending on the clearance of the trans tunnel if may pick up high enough to move forward over the mounts.

Thanks guys. I didn't know if you could slide the engine off the input shaft of the trans or not. On my Chevelle and Camaro I can bench press the muncie on and off so its not a big deal but Im not tough enough for the truck pieces. So the trans and t-case will be ok with just the crossmember holding them up?

when i pulled a motor and left the tranny in i used a jack stand to suport the tail shaft and anything else that might pull down on the cross member. as a just in case sorta thing

Dont be ashamed to ask questions around here lol! as for pulling the motor, i prefer to do it with the trans bolted to the motor however i have never done an engine swap on a 4x4, so i would imagine you would have to at least unbolt the t-case to get it out easily.

I've pulled mine in one piece before, motor, tranny, and transfer case. Get a transmission jack under the tail end of the transfer case, separate the crossmember from the frame and the transfer case, and remove it all as one unit. Keep in mind this takes at least two people. Leave your e-brake engaged, as well.

As you lift the engine use a jack under the trans and jack it up as high as it will go. It usualy bottoms out on the floor pan. This should get you enough room to slide the engine off of the input shaft.

My B.I.L.s father told me about this over 20 years ago,pull front clip first,then engine or engine& tranny...way easier too.Been doing it that way ever since,just pulled a 6.2/400 combo last weekend this way.Was around 2 hours had front clip off,205 case pulled,then engine& tranny out.The older I get,this really works good!!

And if I need to roll it or it will be out for an extended period of time I either use a welding rod/clothes hanger and wire it up to something on the firewall or if the frame is where I can run a 2X4 or long extension rail to rail (side to side) I will use 2 long bolts like a starter bolt with nuts on the back side to set it on or secure it to the 2X4.

when i did my ramp truck swap for a 350 to a 454 all i did is in bolt the bell houseing start to pull the motor straight up till the trans is up against the floor put a jack under the trans and then pull motor forward. works so well, puting the motor back in takes a little wiggling of the motor to get it to line up with the imput shaft. if the motor its self in less then an hour spent more time geting tools crane (i used a wrecker with a boom for the in out of the boom) and making up the exhaust system. its the best way to do it if you are leveing the trans. also works on auto trans to just make sure the converter is all the way back+

For my Manual Transmission truck, I found unbolting the transmission from bellhousing, then pulling engine/bellhousing, to work best
Then to put back in, I lowered the transmission, and put that in after the engine came back in Dont forget a jack stand on whatever you leave in! You dont wanna tweak your trans crossmember! |
