Question Back Up Lights

Did our trucks never come with them? If they didn't it seems kind of odd because my El Camino is a 64 and it has them. Have any of you added them?

Re: Back Up Lights

1966 is when they were put on a the factory, a long with seat belts. But adding them to a truck that did not have them can be done.
I have a 67 steering column in my 67 and it has the wiring for it and my new wiring harness is also equipped with it (aftermarket). So I will be adding them later.

1964 GMC Accessories Book

Below is a kit that would have been dealer installed. 4 speed reverse switch mounted on top of the shifter assembly and the 3 speed or Automatic reverse switch mounted on the steering colum.

Re: Back Up Lights

Tapered rubber adapters for mounting on step side fenders. 1966 stepside fenders had an additional embossment to eliminate the rubber wedges.

Re: Back Up Lights

I added vintage accessory lamps next to my license plate, wired up to the transmission. Here are a few photos showing how they turned out:

And here’s how well they work at night:

Re: Back Up Lights

Also, factory back up lights on this series were optional as far back as 1960. Following are the applicable pages from the 1960 Accessories Installation Manual for anybody they might benefit:

Re: Back Up Lights

Thank you for all the detail info guys.

I will be adding them since this will be a daily driver with an aftermarket shifter. I will fab up a mount so I can get away from the Lokar style.

Originally I wired them up to a lighted toggle switch on the dash, but I kept forgetting to turn them off. So I picked up a Hurst reverse light switch and wired them up to the shifter. Now they just come on automatically when reverse is selected.

Re: Back Up Lights

I've seen old remnants of the shifter switch, but I've never seen the whole kit in such nice shape.
Great Pics!

It was likely an aftermarket addition installed by a previous owner.

Mark - That's a nice looking set-up... subtle & effective - your truck is absolutely one of my favorites.

Re: Back Up Lights

I worked in a Chev dealer parts dept for over 30 years and I don't ever remember looking up one of those switches for a manual transmission. Very interesting looking switch. Always learning something new.

From what I have found looks like it was optional 60-65/66 then standard 66/67 on the SM420.
