hidden coolant leak

1990 GMC C1500 w/5.7 AT
Have been trying to find a coolant leak. Cleaned up the underside, drove it, parked for 20 mins. Coolant was dripping out the weep hole of the torque converter cover plate. Is it making it's way there from higher up on the engine ? Hard to see back of the engine up against the firewall.

Re: hidden coolant leak

Blue, If you can get your hands on one, a pressure tester will make your life alot easier. Check the coolant passages on the intake, (all four corners) the heater hose/connecter at the rear passenger side of the engine, and, then the freeze plugs on the back of the block. You will need to remove the torque converter cover to do that. A good light and small mirror will help there. let us know how it turns out.

Re: hidden coolant leak

Heater hose connector is OK. 1st place I looked. Gotta hope you find an easy fix now and then. Will check the intake and freeze plugs once I get my hands on a pressure tester. THX

Re: hidden coolant leak

just some food for thought, my wife had a 96 suburban . the intake gasket blow the water traveled from the front left corner to the back of the motor then dripped down the left rear of the motor and rolled down the tranny. so just because thats where you see the water that dont mean thats where it is coming from.

I been having the same problem, just last night I looked under because I could smell antifreeze, then I as well seen antifreeze on the converter plate, around the starter...Hope it's not the freeze plug, if so that's a tranny removal..

Re: hidden coolant leak

Leak has been found. Did the pressure test and it was the intake manifold in the back, passenger side. The slime trail going down the back of the block and onto the starter confirmed. Replaced the manifold gaskets yesterday. All looks to be good. I will change the oil next because I know I spilled some coolant into the galley when removing the manifold. Appreciate the considerations.
