Patching rust
I am taking a auto body repair class at the local vo tech center. What gauge metal is most appropriate for my 67 GMC to patch small areas of rust with? Teacher said 20 gauge but he wasnt sure if it might need to be 18 for an older GMC truck

Re: Patching rust
X2 Some might say it's 19 gauge but given a choice, use 18.
Take all the guess work out of it and use and old rotted hood for patch work.

Re: Patching rust
Yep, old hoods are great for making patch panels. When we built my '67 we used the old hood off of it to make a lot of floor patch panels.

Re: Patching rust
Old road signs and a rivet gun. But seriously, old hood or 18 gauge.

Re: Patching rust
That's funny but... I have found it done on floor boards and cab corners. It still had the reflective material inside the cab.

Re: Patching rust
So have I, numerous times over the years. Now, I have not been beyond pop riveting pieces of sheet metal over rust holes to get $50 beater cars through inspection, but I would never steal a road sign for such a thing.

It's not stealing, they're being green, it's called repurposing!!

Re: Patching rust
And thanks for passing on the "reuse the hood" tip. I'll have to replace my hood anyway, so this can still save a little $$
