Whose got a leaf rear end that can help with sport bumper brackets?

I'm still trying to get the sport bumper brackets to work on my 1/2 ton short bed leaf spring truck. I ordered the brackets for a leaf spring rear end, but I cant find any holes in the frame that line up. What I need to figure out is where the holes should be in the frame, so when I drill the holes, the bumper will line up correctly.

Here are a some pics - pic one is driver side behind the frame rail, pic two is driver side forward of the frame rail. Pics 3 and 4 are pass side forward of the frame rail. As you can see, the end of the brackets bump into the rivet heads, so I might have to trim the brackets as well as drill them.

If anyone has pics or explanations of how the brackets should be attached forward of the frame, that would be great!

Not sure how much help these might be, mine is lwb leaf, the P/O ordered the bumper, I just installed it and added the tow hitch at the same time. the pics are of both insides and passenger outside the frame.

hmm.. missing security token disabled pic upload.

let me try again

Re: Whose got a leaf rear end that can help with sport bumper brackets?

Thanks for the pics, Socal and Rsavage. Rsavage -unfortunately I can't tell much from your pic because it doesn't show the frame rail where the bracket attaches forward of the rear crossmember like in my pic 2 and 3. Socal- the pics are good to show me how different the long bed is from the shortbed. I'd still like to see pics of a shortbed with sport bumper to see how it's supposed to attach - anybody? anybody?

Re: Whose got a leaf rear end that can help with sport bumper brackets?

Stickman, I took a look at the picture of your truck in your "to trim or not" post and it looks like you've got what I've been calling a "sport bumper" (as opposed to the heavy duty barden bumper).

Here is a picture of the actual bumper - just a smooth chrome bumper. Also, here is a link to what I think is the same bumper in the LMC catalog. If you could post pics of how the bumper brackets mount to the frame rails, I would really appreciate it!

Guessing here since it's done it to me in the past.

Hold the cursor on the pic you want to download to see what size it is. If it's too large, resize it. The manage attachments may be culling them out if they're too large.

Re: Whose got a leaf rear end that can help with sport bumper brackets?

Years ago I put a bumper in a truck. It wasn't like yours but I had to fabricate and mount the brackets and used some large clamps to locate where I wanted the bumper. Then drilled the holes for the brackets. A buddy of mine did the same but he tacked his with a welder.

Re: Whose got a leaf rear end that can help with sport bumper brackets?

SoCal Super provided you with pictures of the correct set up. Inner brackets go on the inside of the frame rails with the notch cut out up. The inners are at an angle up. The outer brackets just use the rear most bolt of the inner bracket and are placed on the outside of the frame rail. You shouldn't have to drill any holes in the frame.

Re: Whose got a leaf rear end that can help with sport bumper brackets?

Thanks Guys, SoCal's pics are for a long bed, I'm trying to figure out the difference between the long bed and the short bed. Stickman, if you can't load the pics you took, do you mind emailing them to me at hpcbmw@yahoo.com? I'm trying to figure out if my truck is different from normal. If so, then I'll have to fabricate something, if not, then I just need the correct brackets.

Re: Whose got a leaf rear end that can help with sport bumper brackets?

I do not believe that there are any differences between the long and short bed leaf spring rears. I have sport bumpers on both the 71 Blazer and the 70 shortbed, both 4X4's, mounted just as socal super and stickman show. The only difference that I am aware of is when the frame has horns such as on a Burb and then the inner bolts bolt directly to the frame and the outer brackets only are used.

Re: Whose got a leaf rear end that can help with sport bumper brackets?

RSavage, if you look at the pics in the very first post, you see the rivets get in they way of the mounting brackets, and there is no hole for the forward most mounting bolt. These are the rivets for the rear leaf spring hangers.

I'm thinking that the brackets must be different for long and short bed, as the long bed leaf spring hanger rivets would be a foot or so forward.

Stickman - thanks, I'm looking forward to your pics.

If it turns out that my truck is different from everyone elses, I'll try to return the new mounting brackets I bought recently, and use the old coil spring mounting brackets to try to fabricate something.
