Had an idea for a bench seat cover

I don't like vinyl for my climate. Too hot in the summer, and cold in the winter here. As for fabric, it seems like at the end of the day you're basically left with SaddleBlanket, but I'm not crazy about the look, and don't like the gritty feel they get after trapping dust and dirt.

I've had leather on multiple vehicles, and love it. I was thinking I could buy a brown weathered cow hide or two, and have a seat cover place wrap my seat. My '69 has the one year only dark navy blue interior, so I was thinking it might look pretty neat. How many hides do you think it would take? One, two, or more?

Has anybody here tried something like this?

Here's a sample I'm thinking of

I have not tried or even thought of what you want to do, but it does sound like a neat idea!

I think it's a great idea and will look incredible with the blue/patina. Have that farm truck look to it. Depending on the size of the hides, I would say 2 hides but maybe 3 if they need a lil extra for the sides, etc...

AWESOME!!!!!

I have had the same idea.....

When I redo mine back to Dark Olive Green , I want to do my seat in a saddle leather. Then a mathing dash pad. I think it would look good against the green.

Re: Had an idea for a bench seat cover

The stock look in leather can be easily maintained. For the retail price of a couple of range hides and the resulting mismatch I would look into have a set of leather covers made locally. A blue leather seat cover inserted with pleated blue suede pigskin makes a very nice seating surface. Of course then you could make a cover for you steering wheel as well. Truckseat could probably whip a set up for you reasonably too if he does not already catalog them.

However there was a member here who did a cover similar to your idea.

Hand stitching though is the hard way!

Re: Had an idea for a bench seat cover

I love leather and handmade things. But leather is about the same as vinyl to be. It gets cold,is slippery, and gets about as hot. My Harley saddle gets so hot it will burn my axx. I know that's in full sun. But,why not just have an upholstery shop make do the seat in a totally comfortable fabric?
