250/th350
So I been workin lil by lil on my 67 chevy c10 lwb. I have a l6 250 that came out of a 67 c10 stepper. the transmission I bought is supposely rebuilt and its a th350. Well I dont have anywere to put the kickdown cable. I was thinkin about giving the th350 to grandpa's 64 chevy truck. Should I go with another th350 but with a shift kit and will that not need the kickdown cable anymore? OR should I go with a powerglide? I believe a powerglide would of been used in a 67 and older? This will be my daily driver.

Re: 250/th350
You could also use a TH400 with electronic kickdown. Very easy to set that up if you want a 3 speed auto. It does eat a bit more HP than a 350 though.

Re: 250/th350
Both the accessory parts of the Holley and Edelbrock people make and sell all kinds of brackets and throttle ends that can be added to the throttle linkage that is allready on your carb to make it do what you need it to do. I would do a search in the Jeg's or in Summit's cats and see what is in there to help you with your needs. I personally don't think in a daily driver that your gonna be happy with a 350 with out a kickdown cable because you will be doing a lot of manuel shifting without that cable and that kinda defeats the idea of having an auto trans in the first place. Also if your heart is set on a trans swap look into a 700R4 or a 200R4[ it is the same length as your 350 and no drive shaft mods!] and with the latter the 6 cyl motor will love the ratios of the trans and the gas mileage will love the od

Re: 250/th350
With the 700r4 and 200r4 you need a kickdown cable on them or else they take a crap on ya? We did research and they dont make kickdown brackets for my 67 l6 250 because these trucks didnt come with them originaly. Think it was a powerglide if anything not th350? My dad has an idea on a bracket to make. hopefully we make it work great and I love the setup. So I dont have to go back under and pull this trans out. To much work haha

Re: 250/th350
So I decided just to keep my transmission. Noob question. But I thought when checking trans fluid you should have the truck running? When i checked my fluied while running it shows at the tip of dipstick. But when I have it off it shows at full line. Is this good or bad?

Could be bad!
Check the vent. It could be plugged. |

All manuals and instructions say to check the fluid on transmissions while running in park and after the engine is warmed up to operating temp.

Re: 250/th350
When I bought my transmission a few years back. the guy said it was rebuilt. I put about 7 quarts in it and that might be why it leaks. The dipstick I pulled from a 69-72 nova th350. Might be shorter. Not sure what year my trans is or what it came out of. It has an M on it. The vent looks clean to me. Here is the transmission before I put it in the 67.

Re: 250/th350
For V8's yes, for straight sixes, most aftermarket people become deaf and dumb.

Re: 250/th350
I really like the simplicity of the straight six. I dont expect to burn out or take off fast. Just a good solid driver. I take this stuff serious in tryin to do it right the first time. But I forget alot of the basics. I havent had my own vehicle to drive in over 3 years. And I never drivin this truck but as far as down my street and back. Still needs registration and plates So i want to do it right the first time or try and avoid any mistakes. Motor doesnt have any leaks but just that trans. To me i looks like its comin from the kickdown cable. Not the dipstick. I think 7 quarts might have been to much and maybe the kickdown cable is missing a gasket?

Re: 250/th350
I did this swap on a 69 truck some years ago. For me, the easiest solution was to swap intake and carburetor on the engine. I used a intake/carb off a mid 70s straight six Nova from the junkyard. That got me a cable operated throttle and it had the bracket for the th350 cable from the factory.
Point I'm making is, there were about a gillion GM cars during the 70s with straight sixes out there and they all used cable operated throttles and had provisions for the trans cable you need to use also. |

Re: 250/th350
does anyone know the pros and cons to a powerglide? Can I use my th350 cooler lines for a powerglide and my torque converter? Thank You.

Re: 250/th350
50Bomb I'm in the same boat as you . I'm also using a 350 trans that I got out of a 72 TWD Blazer. Now in the same hunt for the same parts. TX Firefighter thanks for your many helpful info's . Any idea what year the turbo 350 started and when they used them with the L6? Ok I'm sorry for stepping on your post.Good luck with your find 50Bomb I'll be sure to post mine when I'm done.

Re: 250/th350
When the motor is running fluid is suspended (in use) inside of the tranny. Once you shut if off is all drains down into the pan. That is why it reads differently on the dip stick between off and running. Also, the fluid expands slightly that is why you check it running with the motor warm. So this is normal operation "good" to answer your question.

Im no expert but my 68 had a powerglide from the factory and either that year or the next the 350 became an option. I have driven both and in my opinion I would stick with the 350 that is in there and try to find (junk yard) or fabricate the bracket for the kick down cable. link...1968. The standard drivetrain came with a three speed manual transmission and one of two engines; the 250 in³ straight six or the 283 cu in (4.6 L) V8. The optional transmissions were the four speed manual, the Powerglide and the Turbo-Hydramatic 350 and 400. The 700r4 and 200 for that matter technically use a TV cable not a kick down cable. From what I understand you definately have to have that hooked up or it messes up the "guts"

Re: 250/th350
I would do as TX Firefighter suggests, hunt the wrecking yard. Most kickdowns seal with an o ring if yours has been sitting it may have dryed out replace the o ring. It's not a hard job.
