Sharing A '70 Longhorn I Saw Today For Sale

Saw this truck for sale and thought I would share here incase anyone might be interested. It's in decent shape and looks to be mostly all original. Body looks good. Few small rust spots but nothing major. It's a 1970 CST Longhorn. It's in North Mississippi about 45 miles south of Tupelo.

This is personally the first Longhorn I've ever seen that I can remember. How rare are these trucks? Or are they even considered rare? Did they only come in the 3/4 ton version?

Here's a few pics

I stopped to look at it and when I got close to it I thought someone had extended the bed!!! Then I took a look and saw that it was factory.

I would have to say thats fairly rare in that condition, most of them were ran into the ground back in the day.

They're not common. I've seen a few around my area, but not many at all. They also only came with wood bed floors.

They're cool trucks and based on the pics it looks to be worth what he's asking.

Here's some info on them:

I've got a few more pics if anyone needs them. This is a V8 truck with all the air conditioning still in place. Don't know if its working but it looked to be all there.

It does have a wood bed which I assume may need work. It had plywood covering the original floor.

What was the purpose for the Longhorn? Camper?

that was one of its main purposes - to fit one of the larger camper sizes back then required an 8.5' bed. That one is very nice, especially for the price. And a CST with a tool storage box!

I should point out that the tool box door had been tack welded shut.

Interior was a little rough. Didnt have a floor mat or carpet. Seat and door panels needed work.

Re: Sharing A '70 Longhorn I Saw Today For Sale

The Longhorn was offered in both C20 3/4 ton and C30 1 ton as Fleetside pickups from mid 1968 through 1972 (models CS/CE21034 & CS/CE31034). These trucks featured a 8 1/2' bed. Basically they were a parts bin solution to carrying long heavy campers with a lot of rear overhang.
By building the Longhorns on the heavier one ton frame the wheelbase was extended 6" (from 127"). This allowed the bed to be extended forward, which in turn allowed the load (camper) to slide further forward adding weight to the front suspension thus better balancing the vehicle. However it was not a tailored camper package, but instead a long heavy duty Fleetside pickup sprung as a 3/4 or 1 ton truck. Concurrently Chevrolet also offered a one ton stepside pickup with a 9' bed (CS/CE31004) that could also be "Custom Camper" optioned.

Chevrolet did offer a "Custom Camper" (RPO Z81) nameplate option on most of its trucks. Basically it required qualifying options that were model specific. Examples are front stabilizer bar, HD shocks, springs, tires, ect., but not mirrors.

If you have more pictures I would like to see them.

This has nothing to do with this post but I wanted to do a late welcome to you from eastern Arkansas. I am about a touch less than an hour to the southwest of Memphis TN and I go there every two weeks for some medical treatments I take. I used to come to fulton years ago to race at the track a couple of times cause it opened earlier than anyone else, we also used to race at the Byhalia race track a lot back in the day. Thanks for the memories sparked by your avaitar. Jim

Cool! How long since you've raced at Fulton and Byhalia? I used to race at both tracks alot although I haven't raced in a few years now. I had a '70 1/2 camaro. Yellow with black SS stripes.

Re: Sharing A '70 Longhorn I Saw Today For Sale

They are a bit rare in 1970 Chevrolet only made 5,281 of these trucks. That may seem like alot but it's not when you think that Chevrolet built 70,880 of the C-20 127 inch w/b 8 ft fleetside. Nice truck.

Re: Sharing A '70 Longhorn I Saw Today For Sale

Don't let the plywood in the bed fool you - based on its shape and the fact that the tailgate isn't there, I would suspect that was perhaps the platform for the camper it hauled. The bedwood showing in the last few inches looks pretty intact - and if it's been covered most or all of its life with a camper (or at least that platform), then it's probably pretty darn decent...

I think this truck is EASILY worth the asking price. Forget CST, forget the interior parts that need to be replaced, it's a longhorn with what looks like original paint in incredible condition. Aside from that whole welding the tool storage shut, but still.

Re: Sharing A '70 Longhorn I Saw Today For Sale

While the truck presents well in the pictures there still some considerations. The first is the repacement engine. The paint may have a partial or major respray sometime in its history as evidenced by the overspray on the firewall hoses. The A/C being unplugged and uncapped is never a good thing. The rust along the cowl plenum may be minor or tip of the iceberg. It may very well have carried a camper but the truck is also sprung very light for a Longhorn. But this may be a positive for a sport truck.

Speaking of Longhorns, a friend called me today to say he picked this one up for $1300. Found it outside of Houston. It's a 1 ton, 402 motor, rust free cab, PS, PB, working A/C and the damn thing runs. Drove it home over 100 miles and says it ran great! What luck!

Interesting - I've never seen a longhorn with the aux fuel tank door installed IN the longhorn extension itself. I'd say your bud got a great deal.

Oh my gosh, it was like the early to mid 1990's when I was into bracket racing. I had a 71 bigblock chevelle that was red with black stripes and had a lot of fun doing that and when the fun ended [for me] so did the racing.
