NP 205 or NP 241?

I've searched, and I'll admit to being a little confused by what I've found so far.

My 72 Blazer is getting a generous donor vehicle; I'm taking the 350 TBI and 700R4, along with all the associated parts. The donor vehicle is an 89 and has a NP 241 transfer case; the 72 has the NP 205. I think I'd like to keep the 205, but I understand I will need to either change the trans output shaft or buy an adapter (or both?) and the engine needs to go forward a few inches (no problem there). I've heard that the NP 241 would bolt right up without mods, but I'm not sure about that, and I've heard it's not as solid as the NP 205.

I plan to freshen up the 700R4 before I install it, but not sure what I need to do (the donor is a running vehicle) but any advice or opinions, especially by people who have done the swap, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks a ton!

Re: NP 205 or NP 241?

I'm betting the 241 front output is on the wrong side? If it's an IFS it's on the D/S. I'd take the all gear driven, cast iron case 205 over the 241 anyday.

Re: NP 205 or NP 241?

I don't want to hijack the thread, but let's see if we can get lots of information in one location, because I have a question thats along the same topic, and the answer could be useful to the original poster.

What are the stock transfer case option? And where/what vehicles would we find them in? Something that would bolt right up, or at least has a very cheap adapter, and doesn't require anything more difficult than drivelines and crossmember relocation.

I'm not an expert, but I seem to recall reading that the GM version of the NP241 is indeed a driver-side drop, as SunSoaked mentioned, but the Dodge version is a passenger-side drop. But I don't know about the mounting difficulty.

What was the normal/common transfer case for the 700R4, was it the NP208?

Re: NP 205 or NP 241?

Could be driver or passenger drop if it came in a blazer or suburban up to 91. Depends on what you are going to use it for I suppose. 241 has a nice low range and is already attached. It probably wouldn't have much trouble behind a tbi 350 if you aren't beating on it.
Slip yoke eliminator kit is available too.

Re: NP 205 or NP 241?

Depends what you want the rig for. I wouldn't be scared of the 241. Wicked low range and shift on the fly for 4 hi.

I know a guy who has a Duramax/ZF6/241 combo and he has no issues with it off-road.

More info is definitely better! The question was asked about use; mostly road, mild off-road in dirt, rocks, and snow, but no extreme crawling (I'm not the sort who thinks rolling my Blazer is fun!)

With the 241, can I keep the stock drivelines and T-case shifter location?

Thanks, and keep it coming.

The 241 has a slip yoke for the rear out put, so front and rear shaft ,t-case shifter will all need work done. It's not going to be a drop in .

You will be fine with the 241.

Re: NP 205 or NP 241?

Thanks for all the info. It sounds like I'd be better off getting an adapter to mate the 700R4 to my NP 205. I just went through it last summer and replaced the seals, and I like how easily it shifts now, so that's what I'll probably do.

Thanks again.

You can't really go wrong with the NP205. They are tough cases.
