URGENT(ish)

Hey, so i was showing my friend how the gears change in my truck, and my transmission is now locked up. The shifter is in neutral, but the transmission is in first. I know because I can start it and drive a little and it for sure is in first, but my column shifter wont do anything. Any ideas.

Re: URGENT(ish)

On my 67 i had to down shift it from 3rd to 2nd and then to 1st if i didnt it would get stuck.

My fix was to open the hood and move the rods up and down untill it freed up. It was quick and easy but i never could figure out exactly what movment worked. I hope this helps you.

Yup. Your shifter is toast, due to being sloppy. It's going to take some work to get it better, but start with replacing all the bushings in the shift linkage, that'll take care of most of it. The rest of it is in the trans.

Re: URGENT(ish)

Should be able to get it unlocked with some prying of the linkage I had a old 3sp that did that if you did not shift it slow.

Re: URGENT(ish)

Pop the hood and get the two ears that come out of the column ( the ears that the linkage rods attach to) lined up again. When the gear shift is in neutral they should be lined up together not one up and one down). It will then shift again. When the column is worn, the ears don't work as they should i.e. you are trying to move into two gears at once - and you get a jam. This usually occurs when you are shifting from first to second. One trick to shifting with a worn column, is to go straight up to neutral, straight down towards the dash in neutral and then straight up to 2nd. If you try to shift it quickly and at a diagonal, it will jam often.

Re: URGENT(ish)

Mine used to do that. Chock the tires and apply parking brake then crawl underneath and push the shift arms on the tranny to verticle (neutral).

Shift slower and try not to cut the corners of the pattern. Mine used to get stuck in 1st and 2nd at the same time, way too much fun to fix at the stoplight.

Re: URGENT(ish)

I had a '77 that liked to do that at busy intersections! I recall going from 3rd back to 1st was when it would do it.

My "fix" was to shut if off, pop the hood and push the fingers or whatever they were back into the steering shaft. By then most of the cars that were behind me now pissed off had went around me. These parts were always sticking out when this happened. I never investigated it further as it would have cut into my drinking time too much back then.

Re: URGENT(ish)

When it happens get under the hood and take the shift arms at the column and line them up with each other. You'll be in neutral. Takes seconds. My old Advanced Design made me a PRO at it. I found that w/ my rig trying to 'slip' from one gear to another or speed shift made it happen every time.

Try it,you'll like it.

There have been thousands of perfectly good column shifters replaced with floor shift because no one knew to just adjust them.I know I have been guilty of replacing them because I didn't know.I like the column shift,it's different and few people have ever driven one.
