Can you get rear end ratio from VIN?
Found a Gen 2 F Body parts car to steal a rear end from. The snow was too deep and I was too lazy to crawl underneath it yesterday to see if it had a tag.
Is it possible to pull the rear end ratio off the VIN? Thanks Fellas!! |

Re: Can you get rear end ratio from VIN?
As far as I can tell, I'm afraid you can't.
This website should show you what exactly your VIN says. http://53truck.ez15loan.com/howto/vin.htm |

Re: Can you get rear end ratio from VIN?
2nd Gen Fbody (If I'm reading your post correctly) has build sheets on the top of the gas tank (forget that) and behind the upright rear seat. Although some years vary, what year is the car?

Re: Can you get rear end ratio from VIN?
And too bad you're not closer since I have a bunch of those rear axles. I'd give you one. I just can't bring myself to junk any of this stuff. Someone has to need it!

Oh, my bad.
I didn't quite read that correctly. But here's a diagram of where all the VINs are on the truck. (just in case) What year is the parts car? |

Re: Can you get rear end ratio from VIN?
Coach,
I just logged onto Dealer Global Connect and the vin is no longer supported by GM. Grab the "G" codes on the glove box sticker and we can help. Last edited by NEWFISHER; 02-11-2013 at 11:58 AM. Reason: I spell like a 3rd grader from my "smart"phone |

Re: Can you get rear end ratio from VIN?
This should help.
Camaro/Firebird Service Parts Label Identification Label is located in the center console, below the console door. It includes the vehicle identification number, a listing of option codes, paint type, paint code, and an interior trim code. Example Option Codes: AQ9 Adjustable Custom bucket Seats AU3 Power Door Locks CC1 Removable Glass Hatch Roof Here's what you want to look for: Axle, Rear 3.45 Ratio GM3 Axle, Rear 2.73 Ratio GU2 Axle, Rear 3.08 Ratio GU4 Axle, Rear 3.23 Ratio GU5 Axle, Rear 3.42 Ratio GU6 Axle, Rear 3.27 Ratio GW6 Limited Slip Differential Axle G80 Axle, Performance Ratio G92 |

Re: Can you get rear end ratio from VIN?
I came up with the same as Mechanixman, 1982-92 should be 62" backing plate to backing plate.

Re: Can you get rear end ratio from VIN?
Not quite, from center (of wheel/tire) to center, it's 61 in the back. So your wheels would stick out maybe a 1/4 to a 1/2 on either side.

Re: Can you get rear end ratio from VIN?
Swung by the scrap yard today on my way home....of course with no tools. They had slipped the Trans Am over for me. I could not find a code on the axle. Could not find any G codes inside either.
I did not have any tools to pull the diff cover. I could not unbolt the driveshaft either!! I did find a couple nice 5 bolt steels wheels as rollers and a couple more tailgates though!! GM 10 bolt anyway........ |

Re: Can you get rear end ratio from VIN?
On the camaro rearend I have I found the stamped letters/numbers on the passenger side of the axle housing. Found the ratio and coding info at nastyz28.com.
Hope that helps you some. |

My research is not turning out positive. Only two gear rations were available that year on a Firebird. 3.42 and 2.73. 3.42 would work........but I am afraid 2.73 would be way too tall. |

Re: Can you get rear end ratio from VIN?
Looks like my rear end is a 2.41:1 which is on the high end and they made it that year for "fuel economy".
I might start looking for another rearend, possibly something with a posi in it. |

Re: Can you get rear end ratio from VIN?
I plan on upgrading to a T5 transmission in the next year....so a 3.40-3.70 gear ratio is what I am shopping for.
