flowmaster 40 vs 44

I'm looking to upgrade the mufflers on my 64 k10 and want a really aggressive muffler. i've got a 327 from a 68 c20 in mine and am looking for a really loud rumble at idle, right now i'm looking at flowmasters original 40 and their super 44 what do you guys think?

Hey there! Before i bought my 65 c10, i had a 79 trans am with a big lopey cam, full lengths and a 2 1/2 h pipe with a pair of 44's dumped. It sounded awsome at idle, and resonated like you wouldnt believe. I used to set off car alarms when i rolled through parking lots. Then i bought a 72 grand prix and ran 2 1/2 true dual from the manifolds dumped at the rear end with a pair of summit racing full welded single chambers. That car was as loud as my t/ and i only spent abot $60 for the pair of mufflers. But if your going for best sound at idle go with the single chamber 40's.

I love them, but if I were to do it again I'd go with Hooker Aero chambers or Hooker max flows.

As far as flowmasters go, Super 40's or original 40s. I can hear mine at idle quite a ways a way. The 40's do that as well, but don't have quite the same high pitch at higher rpms.

The PO of my truck put some 40's on it. I hate them, terrible drone, just too much. As soon as I can they are getting 86'd.

There is a difference between "loud" and "noise", the Flowmasters are simply the latter IMHO.

If you want them loud get some turn downs. Guaranteed to set off car alarms and wake you neighbors up in the morning. My new exhaust will not have them do to the for mentioned reasons.

Only 44s I have are on my 88 monte ss with a 383. Best sounds I have heard from a muffler

Flowmasters:

Differences in 1, 2, and 3 chamber mufflers.

1 Chamber - aggressive tone.
2 Chamber - moderate tone.
3 Chamber - mild tone.

If you haven't bought the mufflers yet, I would encourage you to do some research on mufflers before you buy.

Believe me, the sound of a Flowmaster will get old quickly, especially the drone at highway speeds. Forget about having a conversation without shouting or listening to the stereo at lower levels. I had 40 Series Flowmasters in 3", loved them at first, and then changed them out.

There are much better mufflers out there. The packed mufflers like Magnaflows, Dynomax and Borla always make 10-15 more horsepower on the dyno, and that's been proven many, many times. The cool thing about the packed mufflers is that they have a nice rumble at idle, and they get loud when you romp on it, and they are much more liveable at highway speeds. Plus, some of them, like the Magnaflows have a polished stainless outer case, unlike the Flowmasters, which are painted steel.

Just got done installing 2 1/2" dual side exit on my 64. I went with the Thrush Welded Muffler (Flowmaster clone) and it sounds outstanding! The price is really nice too.

I ran Super 40 on my Buick and there was no drone at all.

I think the key is to run the system all the way out the back. If you dump it under the cab or box, you will get a drone no matter what brand you use.

I have run all kinds of mufflers and everything I own has 400-500 plus Hp and always use super 44's on my builds and all the other builds I do, always happy with no drone to speak off, kicks butt at idle and on the highway.

Truth ^ My side exit drones pretty well but only when I'm on the loud pedal.

At least it covers up all the other noises my truck makes! LMAO

I have flowmaster 50's and they sound same as the 40 but No drone at upper speeds..I love them....they cost a bit more but well worth it

That's exactly what I was thinking. I've had 40's on my big block '69 C30 with full tail pipes and no drone at all. Also just a little bit of dynamat or hushmat or any kind of sound deadener helps a lot.

I've also ran the Pypes brand of mufflers and they are excellent also

Haven't used the pro series but heard them, seem to sound simular, the 40's are a bit longer than the 44's also so tend to drone a bit less and also a bit quieter. I tend to use the 44's for the better idle sound and the better fitment due to being short.

I've Used Ever Type Of Muffler Out There.. I Have Used Flow Master For Ever. Did a Tour Of Magna flow I use Them On Ever Build Now I Can Tell The Difference Magna flow Sound Better

I ran Hedman Elite headers and 50 series Flowmasters on my 77 Chev. Sounded great but really didn't drone too bad at all. When I get another old truck I'll probably run something similar, maybe an MBRP to match my DD Silverado.

Not trying to hijack here, but I've got dual no-name turbos on my 235. Fenton headers, and the first thing my 77 year-old Dad said was "it's too quiet".

I'm debating on putting a set of Cherry Bombs or Cherry Bomb glasspacks on it...any suggestions? Pros and Cons? I'm not trying to piss off the neighbors, but I want to hear that rumble.
