1949 Bed compared to a 1946

I am in need of more information. I need a bed for my 1946 Chevy project and I have a buddy that has a pair of 1949 bed sides left from a prev. project. I am wanting to know if anybody knows if I can use the front panel, tailgate and floor parts from a 46 with the 49 bed sides without major modifications. When I was looking up new parts, they listed the bed sides from 1939-1953. I do not know if that means the bedsides are all the same or if that is just a generic description. I need it to be skinnier to match the cab and getting the 46 parts for width would help instead of narrowing all the parts. Thanks for any information.

I have one of these early chevy beds.
its about all there except the wood.

off the top of my head without measuring its about 72inches long, 1949 short bed should be around 78 long. or 79'' if your measuring the top at the roll.

My earlier chevy bed is around 46'' wide and the 1949 bed is around 51'' wide

so I dont really know exacly what year this bed i have is off of but it is roughly 5'' smaller
in LxW.

Im about 4 hours from ya if you wanna come look for yourself....lol

I have made that trip several time. I went to college in Lima. Northwestern University/ UNOH.

Do you know if the front panel and the floor cross braces fasten in the same way that the 47-53 do? The length should not be an issue for me and it might even help. The width is what I am going for. I want it narrow like the 46 should be instead of wide like the 49 should be. Thanks for the help.

the front panel is different at the top, it looks like a tube. the 49 rolls then comes down flat and welded.
the bottom of the 46 is L shape bent toward the wood, something like 1 1/2'' then bolted to the cross sill.

there is, as we speek, one of these beds on ebay.
You may be able to look at it in referance.

I graduated as a hi-performance tech at unoh in 2005. Small world ehhhhh....lol

I guess I really need to see one or just get the parts and see what I can do. I think I would be better finding a 41-46 bed but after looking for years, the only one that I have seen was at the NSRA Nats. North swap meet and it sold before I made it to it.

Is your bed for sale? LOL

I graduated in 1994 as they were just starting to build the building for the Hi Perfomance build. I would have really liked to been able to go thru that program.

Mine is basically the exact bed as that one except the wheel/axle cut out is slightly different.
Mine also has a tailgate but no lettering.
I bought it from a guy that said its chevy,........but i cant verify the year because it was sitting on the barn floor.
I may have to do a little more research to find the exact year.

Oh...and UNOH......they have there own circle track now.
Lots have changed at that place. they own all the grounds by the tracks. its all buildings now.

Yes I seen that but "pick up in Texas" was out of my possibilities. There are a few other parts on there also that I am watching. I will keep an eye out.

Post some pictures on here (probably in the pre 47 section and I bet someone can help you figure out what year it is. Did you get it for a project or just something to have around just in case?

I probably would not even reconize the school anymore. I have not been back over there since I graduated in May of 1994. My buddy in Michigan that is doing the body work for me on my 46 graduated from there also. We met there and were roommates and have stayed good buddies ever since.

I actually bought the bed for a couple reasons.

1. i thought i could make it work on my 50
2. I love to own old stuff that i may need someday down the road.

I know a guy with a 46, tittled low mileage, flat bed, very rusty truck.
If i get my 50 done and make some room around the house, im gonna buy it!!!
These parts are very hard to find these days.
If you see something you can afford, might as well buy it.
Ive got around 400 in this bed.
some people pay 400 just for a truck, im just not that lucky.
ohio eats metal faster than them warmer states.....lol

I try to gather parts but usually it is extra parts for the vehicles I have. I have to many projects now to be adding to them anytime soon. These parts are definatly getting harder to find. I found a Craiglist ad for a 1942 rolling chassis and bed in Sandusky, OH today. It was listed at 9:37am this morning and I called at 1:15pm and the guy said the buyer was pulling out with it as we spoke. Oh well I will keep looking. I am thinking more now about having a bed built. There is a guy in my area that could build one and that might be my better idea. I guess I will seel what I can find. I will still need fenders though. Thanks.
