Re: I found OLD pic of myself hauling in a 4x4

exactly, whatever works!

i wish i had a pic, but back in about 1994 or 95 you should have seen the looks i got in my 84 s-10 shortbox pulling an 16ft flatbed trailer with my 88 chevy 4x4 on it going down the interstate passing cars the whole way.

originally i had the s-10 on the trailer and the 4x4 towing it, dropped the trans out of the 4x4 right as we got to where we were going. got done drag racing the s-10 for the day(my birthday present to myself) and loaded the 4x4 on the trailer, hooked the s-10 to the front and headed it home...

i may have forgotten to mention that it was running a 383 stroker... which at last dyno was putting out 437 horse/459 torque(if my memory serves). at the time i built that thing, i saw one V8 s-10 in hotrod. otherwise they basically didnt exist yet. so we had to build EVERYTHING to get that in there. with a turbo trans and 4:11 gears. that thing was ridiculous. but it did pretzel a few drive shafts and snap a few transmission housings. it was a great sleeper. robin egg blue/white bottom, and fully mufflered.

it could still break the tires loose with that trailer on it. luckily i didnt have to make any sudden stops or direction changes, because it simply would not have happened!

the good old days!

Whatever works? I'm sorry, but I don't call that working. Sure,it made it...this time. Coulda just as easy gone the other way, though. Wasn't there even a few more inches on the trailer for the truck to set farther back? And,didn't you consider loading the rear forward? Oh well...glad you made it and everyone else on the road was spared any harm. You'd never catch me doing that

Exactly, putting others and yourself in danger isn't 'working' IMHO. I've seen what can happen when things like that go wrong and it's usually somebody else that pays the price for that kind of thinking.

Re: I found OLD pic of myself hauling in a 4x4

Thus y I have always taken back roads. Never any 150 miles and slow and steady how I moved my garage and shed too. I agree on safety but if its just me on a gravel road going 5-10 miles 10-35 mph. I'm all for it if I'm the one that tied it down

Re: I found OLD pic of myself hauling in a 4x4

I went to look at a 4-wheeler one day in my 99 malibu with the wife. The guy gave me such a good deal, and he told me that somebody else was on the way with cash, that i took the rims and tires off. With a little help from the gentleman, we loaded the 4 wheeler on the roof and strapped it down. We had about 1 1/2 hour drive home. Wish i had a picture of that.

No they dont always make it. A friend of the family was hauling a trailer back in the 80's it broke loose, broke the chains, went into the back of a station wagon carrying a family and killed two of the four in the car.

That would have been an even WORSE idea. Frankly, as unsafe as that already was, loading it reversed would have been very frightening, with that trailer swaying around every where and transferring the weight off the rear axle of the car, reducing braking effectiveness further. At least the way he had it, the trailer would want to continue tracking straight forward. Sure it wouldn't be able to stop, but that's better than shooting across lanes of traffic and overturning. I do agree, if it had any room to go back, it should have been shifted back a little for a bit less tongue weight, but definitely not with the rear forward. If I saw something like that going down the road today you can bet the highway patrol would be called, call me a snitch if you want, but at least it may save a few lives.

Re: I found OLD pic of myself hauling in a 4x4

We towed my 71 home with a 2010 pathfinder, and even with the 4 way discs and tow package it still smoked the brakes, lucky it wasn't more than 10 miles to my house from where it was. I am surprised you didn't push your shocks through your trunk pan.

Sorry to hear that. Wasn't meaning "everyone" just the few old guys I know that have been scrapping all their life but they also were using trucks not cars

Maybe it's just from working on and moving oil rigs across Colorado I have seen some heavy loads ( properly strapped chained down) but going down the highway as I said is pretty dangerous I stick to slow and gravel. Wouldn't know what to do if I killed some one dew to my comfort zone and was wrong

Re: I found OLD pic of myself hauling in a 4x4

I'm glad I'm not alone in thinking towing like that is just plain wrong. I don't care what the reason, putting others at risk because your not prepared is not an excuse. And calling highway patrol is not snitching IMHO.
