Question Trans X-member missing parts.

Hey guys,

Never really paid attention to the parts I had laying around, but now that I'm at the point where I'm throwing the engine and trans in and I noticed there seemed to be something missing.

So I looked around and found this pic with the two upper mounting wings which I am missing.

What will be the negatives of not having these for the time being. Parts for these trucks aren't to plentiful around here.

Here is what I have now.

Re: Trans X-member missing parts.

Should take the weight, those wings only tie the top of the frame to the bottom, keeps it from twisting...i wouldnt drive on it, but should support for the time being, wouldnt hurt to support the crossmember to the shop floor

Re: Trans X-member missing parts.

Mine is missing one of them, and was wheeled hard by the previous owner. If you cant find any, try making some. Thats what I thought about doing.

Re: Trans X-member missing parts.

You may want to look at DIY4X4. He makes an engine crossmember that has "C"s that tie the top frame rail to the bottom. Maybe he would sell you those "C"s alone and you can use them.

Others have said you can run without the "wings", but with the weight of the trans and Tcase plus the torque of the motor I bet you'll be wallowing out the mounting holes on the lower frame rail fast...

Re: Trans X-member missing parts.

I have a question along this line.My 72,350/350,4X4 is just starting to go back together.I took out a 4 inch body lift which included about a 3inch drop on that same crossmenber for that transfer case.I'm ready to put that crossmember back in minus the drop spacers and need to know if it bolts direct to frame or did the factory and some sort of smaller spacers in there??
