68 50th anniversary experts chime in. Check it out!

I just bought this 1968 Custom 10 yesterday. It is an original paint, 2-owner local truck. It appears to be an anniversary edition, but has black interior. I have read a few discussions on here about correctly identifying these trucks and there appears to be some conflicting ideas. Here's what I've come up with :

* It does have the 551 paint code. If you look at 1968 paint chips, ANNIVERSARY GOLD is coded as 551. There is not another variation of gold. Saddle is the closest to it.

* As far as I can tell, the anniversary trucks of '68 were the only ones to get white paint below the lower trim.

Is this an anniversary edition or not? For the "nay-sayers" who don't like the black interior, why would it have the 551 paint code? Does anyone have any literature that clarifies this?

Let the discussion begin!! Oh, and pardon the red seat!!

Joshua

From the looks of that SPID it appears it is a factory Anniversary Gold (551) truck. It has a required trim option, Z62 Custom Comfort in this case and the required B98 Bodyside moldings. But being the color black interior is not a recommended combination I'd say it was a color overide order. Black and gold were popular colors at the time.

It seems to me someone else popped up here with a 551 color code on a non-50th truck before. I'm thinking it's n over ride,as Tim suggested. I like that combo. Matter of fact,I did a truck just that way 'bout 10 or more years back. It doesn't count for much as an example because I created it. But,knowledgeable people would ask me if it was a 50th all the time. Most of that one was Vermillion

Re: 68 50th anniversary experts chime in. Check it out!

that is a cool color combo it looks good that way.

i allways thought the full wheel covers came on the 50th package but i guess that was a option also I kinda like the caps better anyway

that certainly is a cool score on a "differnt" 50th

Re: 68 50th anniversary experts chime in. Check it out!

Looking back through some old posts, it looks like member "mo" bought a swb gold with black interior. Has anyone been able to dig up some factory literature to clear this up any?

Re: 68 50th anniversary experts chime in. Check it out!

Well like I posted above the only interior color "recommended" was the parchment/gold. If it was in fact an color overide order as I suspect there will not be literature showing it as "available". However if there was a dealer memo or update to the trim chart making it a line choice or deletion I would like to see a copy of it. My reference is dated February '68.

Is the true 50th anniversary edition rare? My truck had the 551 color and the gold hounds tooth inserts in the bench seat with white door panels. Its in primer now and trying to decide what to do.

The seat cover is not at all what I would call a houndstooth. So here are pictures of a stock 50th for comparison. If it was a documented 50th I'd try hard to keep it that way.

Also, just throwing this out there, a 68 ad clearly showing a gold truck without the ivory lower. Probably just a pre-production prototype as it does appear to have a parchment seat.

You are correct. It is not houndstooth but my seat was exactly like you show here. Mine is short bed, wood, 3 OTT, no a/c. The hub caps are like the ones in the add.

68 Iron - It's just a misconseption that the anniversary editions were loaded - kinda like alot of people think that all Cheyenne Supers are loaded with all the goodies. I've got another 68 50th (swb) project truck with fewer options than this long bed! The truck mentioned above has a 307 V8. Thanks for the comments!

What are the wheel sizes on this truck? 15 X ? They look to be 6 lug? Really nice.

I need the hub caps for my 68 anniversary. In the pictures there is 3or 4 different styles on the trucks, which one is correct?

I'm not sure if one is correct. I know most of the CST's had the full wheel covers. What I can tell, the anniversary edition was just the gold paint. I have not seen any dealer literature that shows what would come on one of these trucks.

Re: 68 50th anniversary experts chime in. Check it out!

Joshua I ran across one of these trucks like your a few years back was a 50th and had all bells and whistles, even had a speed warning....the interior was black (dash pad, belts, seat, and door panels) this truck was still owned by the original owner and I asked him about the truck....he told me that he ordered that way and that I needed to remember these trucks were work trucks and that he didn't want the white in his because it would get dirty and show more easily than the black so he chose black.....I think that even though certain things were standard or called for in certain packages all anyone had to do was check a box to revise that and get what they wanted.....it's almost like anything goes on these trucks I recently saw a swb Cheyenne super with an inline six listed on the spid .....I almost fell over
