Need some carb help/advice, Edelbrock 1405

Hoping some carb guru's might be able to help me out with the issue I've been having.

Just swapped my inline 6 for a Goodwrench 350. Bought a new 1405 and haven't been able to get it running right yet. The carb is sputtering out fuel at idle. Engine runs, but barely. Obviously running quite rich.

I'm on my 3rd fuel pump now. Bought the first and then realized it was running too high a pressure (Edelbrock suggests 6psi max). I bought a cheapie that advertised this pressure range, only to find out it was running much higher. Out of frustration, I finally just bought the Edelbrock street pump specifically designed to run these carbs. I haven't checked the pressure on this pump yet as I don't have the right fittings in hand to run a gauge. All 3 pumps and no change.

I've adjusted the floats twice, cleaned out the needle and seat each time. Each time I haven't noticed anything that would cause the flooding issue.

I walked through the float adjustment with Edelbrock on the phone. Got it back together last night and no luck.

Long story short, am I dealing with a bum carb here or could there be other issues? Had several friends verify I have it installed correctly and even walked through the float adjustment with me. Could a vacuum leak cause this condition?

I'm far from a carb expert. Just looking for advice. Quite frustrated as I finally have her back together and my brand new carb is acting up on me!!!!

Manual choke. Played with that as well. No luck

Still sounds like too much fuel pressure. You may want to install a regulator to eliminate the potential issue.

That carb, new, should run on that engine right out of the box. Maybe needing some fine tuning, but that's all--not like you're trying to run a 1050cfm on a tiny v-8 engine! Sounds like it's time for Edelbrock to exchange carbs with you.

Order a regulator from summit or the edelbrock brand fuel pump 6psi, while your waiting for the parts in the mail take the top off clean it reset the float level and rebuild it (can get rebuild kit from autostore around $25).

I would personally do the edlebrock fuel pump (did the regulator myself) its impossible to plumb it pretty with a filter regulator and the general config of the fuel port on the edelbrocks.

Friday afternoon I took all my "hard lines" back off so I can install my pressure gauge. Mind you this is the 4th time in a few weeks I've been doused in gasoline. Crank it over and sure enough, 6psi. Call Edelbrock again, this time I'm not as pleasant. Guy really has nothing to tell me.

Frustrated, I'm about to push it back in the garage and I decide to go ahead and crank it up for grins. Mysteriously, the problem has corrected itself!

Swapped plugs on saturday and did some fine tuning. She's running great!

No idea what the problem was or what the fix was.

Sounds as if the needle has a spot on the viton tip which wasn't seated ,I have seen this several times in the last thirty some years I have been wrenching.

I'm running the 1405 myself. I have since installed the electric choke kit. (I could never work the manual choke myself...)

The truck was my uncle's before he died, and my grandfather's before he died. At some point my uncle installed the 1405, but never installed a fuel filter. One day I couldn't get it to start and ended up hydro-locking my engine with gasoline!

Reading up, I found the carb doesn't come with a filter and an external one must be used. Apparently a bit of debris blocked the needle valve open causing the flooding.

Are you using an external filter?

Yeah, I have an external filter. One issue could have been that I've been swapping back and forth between fuel lines. I have the edelbrock kit that has all fittings and hard lines. But my gauge is just a hose style. Likely I could have gotten some crap in there during one of my swaps.

I will say once I swapped the plugs it was very easy to get it tuned. Truck seems to be liking the carb now.

All I need is to grab some new tires and I'll start exploring outside of the neighborhood.

I just love a happy ending. I own 4 Edelbrock carbs (bought 2 new and 2 "like new") I haven't had any luck with any of them. I am going back to Holleys.
