Re: Painted my license plate.

Here in Iowa we cant paint ours.......but then again we have Iowa State Hawkeyes which colors are black and gold and Iowa Cyclones which are Red and Gold, so they have those colored plates. I prefer plain old plates myself though. But looks like you did good job on your paint.

Re: Painted my license plate.

Most states allow you to register your antique vehicle with a plate from the year of manufacture for your vehicle. California was kind of unique as when you sold a vehicle the plate went with the vehicle and was re-registered with the new owner. As a result a large number of the old black and gold plates are still around.

Re: Painted my license plate.

Here in Ohio, you can run Year of Manufacture plates as part of a Historical registration, but I think that stops at the point where they quit stamping the date? We have had stickers for the registration date for many years now and the plates can last several years, only requiring a new sticker.

That's what caught my eye about the black/yellow plates, no date stamp?

I'm 42 (in 3 days) and plates staying with the car is all I've ever known here in Texas. I hear some states register the plates to the owner & 1 plate can be used on multiple vehicles as a result. Own 4 cars? Only need 1 set of plates if only 1 is going to be driven at a time.

The date stamp is in the well on the right, where the year sticker is placed.

I've heard that you aren't supposed to paint your plates. But I don't know the law on that. I'd like to think that if they looked like new, John Law would approve.

My truck originally had black and yellow commercial plates, but my FIL didn't want to pay the commercial fees, so he converted to "house car" registration and they are now blue with yellow characters. You can tow and so forth, but can't carry stuff in the bed, except for say, camping gear. I've gotten a load or two of wood in there, in the past anyway.

BOT- Your plate looks nice. I repainted my Skylark's front plate- cleaned up the rust and knocked out the dings. I used Krylon engine semi-gloss and mixed my own yellow, using bright yellow with red and black for tint. Topped with an enamel clear coat. Came out real nice.

Re: Painted my license plate.

I read in this months Hot Rod California is thinking of bring back the original gold/black and back/gold plates if there is enough interest, cost is suppose to be around $50. Those in Cali need to overwhelm the DMV and bring them back!

You are correct and incorrect at the same time Sir. Regular PC (Passenger Car) plates (this includes trucks) do stay with the vehicle. They belong to the vehicle not you, however you can purchase plates (antique, classic, personalized) and they belong to you and the vehicle can be changed as needed. My 67 has personal Classic Truck plates and they are mine for 10 years. At that point I can renew them for another 10. Texas is kinda funny about the registration. You also cannot paint your plates.................if they get damaged you have to replace. Here are my plates for my 67. My wife named it The Jolly Roger.

I was not and am not incorrect.

No matter WHAT the plate is, in Texas.....Antique/Personalized/Disabled/WHATEVER.....it cannot be used on more than 1 car AT A TIME! You cannot, in Texas, use 1 plate on multiple vehicles. It can only be registered to 1 car AT A TIME period. Now.....A Personalized/Antique plate can be transferred to another vehicle, but only to ONE CAR AT A TIME.

In no way was I wrong.

As I stated above.....
Some other states will allow 1 plate to be used on multiple vehicles. Different car for every of the week? Fine....1 plate)s) to be transferred to whichever car your driving that day, whenever you wanna drive it.

They look nothing like the originals, other than being the same colors. The font is totally different, they are not stamped as originals, and will be easy to tell the difference.

Re: Painted my license plate.

Daddy they look good, cool idea with the wheels.

Yeah I have also heard the "new" old plates are like a vanity plate where you have to pay an additional $40 a year just for the privilege of having them on your car.

As Steve said,The originals here in Ca. had the date stamped in the upper right sticker well, you can see a faint "63" on this one. Before that they would issue a new plate each year to the car owner. The year would be painted on it, must have gotten way too labor intensive.

Here is one that I hammered out and powder coated and ready for yellow paint. I found that gloss black powder coat is just the right color and finish.

And you still are not allowed to paint them here in Ca. either but if you do it good enough then they don't ask too many questions. I have seen guys painting the 7 digit plates (which here in Ca. are either blue w/ yellow numbers or white w/ blue numbers), none of the Black and yellow plates ever had 7 digits, it is a glaring clue that they altered their plates.

Here is what part I said that you were correct and incorrect about. And you are no matter if you want to admit it or not.

And at no time during my comment did I say nor imply that my Classic Plates could be used on more than one vehicle at a time. Here is what I said “however you can purchase plates (antique, classic, personalized) and they belong to you and the vehicle can be changed as needed. My 67 has personal Classic Truck plates and they are mine for 10 years". I did not say that you could change to whatever vehicle you wanted. But they can be changed to another vehicle after registering them to another.....unlike regular plates.

AND I understand that you were referring to other states which I have never lived in other states therefore I don’t keep up with their laws. You are only a couple of years older than myself and my profession requires me to keep updated on Texas Law therefore my information comes from more than just going down to the tax office and renewing my registration. I actually enforce the laws set up by those brilliant persons who are paid too much money to make new laws that we must follow.

Now with that being said I in no way intended to offend you by correcting your statement which apparently I have done judging by your reply. I am on here to get education as well as share my knowledge, not piss people off. I am perfectly able to accept if I make a mistake on something. If my reply offended you than you took it wrong.

Daddy Brim, sorry to have trampled all over your thread with this discussion.
