Trans question
Did a little research on here and other places. I'm not sure what trans will fit without mod to anything other than the driveshaft. I have a 72 chevy c-10. has the factory 3 speed in it. I would like to put a 4 or 5 speed in it. Are their any trans that will bolt up directly? Using my bell housing and crossmember? or do i need to fit one in completely? Thanks guys!

Re: Trans question
I'm guessing the 3 speed in my truck is garbage. Their isn't a plug an play 4 or 5 speed? an s-10 trans? something better than this garbage 3 speed.
I have heard a camaro 5 speed from the 3rd gens will bolt up... but no confirmation the truck has a 350 in it. Last edited by Redleg87; 05-03-2013 at 11:32 PM. |

Re: Trans question
Check out the Tech section- there's a good tutorial on T5 conversions. A stock
Saginaw or Muncie 4 speed will drop right in- same length as the 3 speed. The Tech sections are the first place to go, when seeking knowledge about a project. I'm on a number of car and motorcycle forums, and this one has probably the best Tech articles of any of them. Posted via Mobile Device

Re: Trans question
If its a manual, you can drop in a Saginaw 4-speed with just a new floor shifter. I did this to mine 2 months ago. I had to buy a Hurst shifter and cut the hole in the floor. Original driveshaft fits. I'm pretty happy with it. Only downside is the Saginaw is only good for about 300 HP.
Others have taken 5-speeds from V-6 S-10's and Camaros. Requires additional work, but can be done. There are several "how-to" threads on the site, so a search is your best friend.

Re: Trans question
Thanks guys. like i say, i looked through some tech and used search, just couldn't find a for sure answer on something that didn't require modding.
I found a saginaw, and going to pick it up tomorrow. The truck has a lil over 500 hp. going to have to get a clutch for sure. |

Re: Trans question
If you do have near 500 hp---youre going to need a muncie m22. Its nick named "the rock crusher" It was the heaviest duty 4 speed of the day.
But, it also depends on final gear ratio and how youre going to be driving the truck. If you are going to run a 3.73 or lower----and if youre not going to run 16" wide tires and on and on-----anyway, for that horsepower the lightest trans Id use would be the muncie m20. Some of the later 5 or 6 speeds might be a good choice as well.
