Just trying to get a rough estimate on how much paint is needed to paint an AD truck including jams and engine bay using base coat clear coat paint

Re: Amount of Paint

Depends on the truck size, color, painter, spray gun type

Re: Amount of Paint

roughly 2.5 gal paint and 3.5 gal clear
like va4 says, a lot depends on...

Re: Amount of Paint

I second Ogre. I used about 2.5 gallons of paint and almost 3 of clear.. Of course I did it a quart at a time and kept going back to get more over the course of a year. I just had a local body shop fix a dent my neighbor put into my truck. The painter asked which part of my truck should he try to match it to.. Smart ass. Get it all at once so it matches.

Re: Amount of Paint

I also 2nd Orge, you might even just want to get 3 gals of color so you'll have some left over in case you need to do touch ups at a later time. Most of the base coats mix 1-1 so you'll end up with 6 gals of paint to spray...
And don't forget the primer, you may need at least 2 gals there.. maybe a high build primer will help you.

Re: Amount of Paint

it also depends on what spraying set up you have. You'll definitely need the 2.5 gallons of paint if you use conventional gravity fed or siphon guns. If you use a good HVLP gun or spray it through an HVLP turbine, you transfer up t 80% of the material to your surface. Conventional guns that spray at 30-50 psi only transfer 50% of the material, the rest is airborne.
You also have to take your primer into consideration. If you have your primer tinted to a color close to your base color, then you'll use less base coat.

The clear coat, it's always better to have more than less because that's a pretty time sensitive process. YOu want to hit your flash times bang on so buy a little extra. I would say 3 gallons of clear and hardener should do it.

Re: Amount of Paint

Depends on the opacity of the base. Buy at least 3-4 gallons and then mix all the gallons together to insure that the color is uniform. More paint stored correctly is never a problem, being a quart shy always is. Pearls, candies or extreme metallics will change how much you need. Jay
