Need a wood finishing experts help
Hey all;
To make a long story short I put a divit into my wood steering wheel with a sharp metal object about the size of a metal golf shoe cleat. I need to repair it and make it look like a natural blemish in the wood, how do I do it? Thanks in Advance. Last edited by Xeen; 02-28-2013 at 07:34 AM. |

Re: Need a wood finishing experts help
in the wood industery we would either mix up some putty or wood glue with some tint(sometimes useing sanding dust from the actual wood) for cracks or bigger chips in your case with something that small we would use a wax pencil they make them in many differnt colors they are pretty much excactly like a big crayon only a bit harder wax rub it on wipe it smooth and reapply some wax of your choice the hardest thing you'll come across is the color matching do you have a box of crayola's around

Re: Need a wood finishing experts help
***Solved***
Ok are you ready for this Ladies Nail filler kit (acrylic powder and solution), several different grit emmery boards, a nail polisher for the finishing work, a heat gun, and some old english to finish it off, it's not perfect but it's a heck of alot better than it was, now it looks like a natural blemish instead of a glaring flaw. Heres the finished product. Last edited by Xeen; 02-28-2013 at 09:33 AM. |

Re: Need a wood finishing experts help
As a former furniture repair guy for Dillards Dept Store, We used wood burn it sticks and electric burn-in knife. Burn-in sticks come in many colors and I would use clear for that. Pretty simple idea a little harder to do. You melt the stick into the divit and pull it smooth with the burn it knife. It requires a pretty fast and smooth hand. Its easy to put marks in the area around the spot if you are to slow but if your to fast you wont get anywhere very fast.
I repair guitars part time now and use ake the clear and put very small amounts in the spot with a toothpick and let it completly dry because it shrinks. DONT GET IN A HURRY. Fill it until you can run your finger over it and tell that it is slightly higher than the surrounding area. Again make sure it is cured. Get a small peice of 400 and 600 grit wet sandpaper and very lightly sand the spot using water as lube. Once its smooth use regular polish to buff the sandpaper haze out.

Re: Need a wood finishing experts help
I actually woke up after 2 hours of sleep with the idea and couldn't go back to sleep so I tried it and I couldn't be happier with the results, now I feel much better about it.
