Is anyone using a remote mini starter?

I have headers and am looking at buying a new starter since it doesn't always start when it is hot. I have it wrapped in a heat shield presently. However, I am also looking at other ideas such as remote mini starter where the solenoid is away from the starter and headers. Any recommendations?

I am running a mini starter I got from DB Electrical on a 454 without any problems so far. I am going to install a remote solenoid on the passenger inner fender before the summer just to make sure I don't have any heat soak problems.

In regards to installing remote solenoid, I assume one has to remove solenoid from mini starter? Is that correct?

No you do not remove the solenoid from the starter. A jumper is installed between the starter and original solenoid.

I bought the kit from Summit and it comes with instructions.

Something to think about:

If your truck starts hard when it is hot (cranks slow) a solenoid relocation is not going to help this. It is not the solenoid that causes this. It is the actual heat soak into the starter motor that makes it crank over slow.

A new starter may help if that is what is causing your problem. Where is your timing set? Can you afford to back it off a couple of degrees and not loose performance?

It does crank slow. Got to give it gas to get it started and I have backed it off using the Edelbrock carbs. I wanted to change the starter myself but the headers are too close. Problem is that I can't find a local store that has or knows what a mini starter is. When I say local store I mean Advance Auto etc. I was just going to go with normal replacement but now am thinking after reading that mini starter is way to go and maybe add remote solenoid later. I also have to get starter off to figure out which mini will work since it is a 350 crate engine with camel humps.

By the way TBONE1964, I read your thread wrong. My truck starts cold but have to give it gas. Once in a while after it is hot, it will not start and the truck just hums. It has done this maybe four or five times since November and I do not want to get stranded.

Local parts places should carry a starter for around a 1995 Chevy truck with a 350 V-8, they are mini starters.

They cost quite a bit more than the one I got from DB Electric or the original stock starter.

If the starter just hums when you try to start it the solenoid is usually weak or bad.

To back up what Shyguy stated, they work great and I have used them before.

A hum and a slow crank are two different problems but it sounds like your starter/solenoid is cooked either way.

Just to clarify my earlier post, I have never seen a solenoid fix a slow crank. A hum yes, but not a slow crank.

I have a Powermaster mini starter on my big block. It eliminates all of the problems associated with OE starters.

If you want to buy one starter and never have to buy another…ever (or keep going back to Autozone/O’Reilly’s to get an exchange every 9 months), get a Denso 281-8002. These are commercial grade starters used in severe applications like UPS trucks that start and stop hundreds of times a day. They are really tiny and light too and sound really cool when starting. I run this part number on my Suburban 5.7L and the K10 with the 8.1L. Not sure how well they would fit with headers though. Probably just fine being they are so small.

My O-Rielly starter has been on the truck now for over 3 years and not one problem. DirtyLarry,
I like that little starter though. They have a nice price to from what google shows.

Cool, glad you’ve had good luck with your O’Rielly starter. Yeah, Denso builds commercial grade starters and alternators and dern proud of it. I think the MSRP on one of these Denso starters is well over $300 but you definitely get what you pay for. Major fleets that have zero tolerance for road calls and downtime use Denso goodies. The flywheel teeth will wear out long before their starters die. Another neat thing about them is they are made in the good ole USA. Not sure there is anything inside an Autozone or O’Rielly store made in the USA

Runs like a Champ!! Went to Dean's Alternator and Starters in Mauldin, SC. They put in a mini starter and it turns easily. They were nice and explained to me the problem with the starters sold at chain auto stores.
