I think I have my next project lined up.

Kind of a long story but here goes. I bought an 85 K10 long bed a couple of years ago. When I bought the truck it was supposed to have all the neccesary paper work to get the title. The paper work was for a lost title and everything was signed. I should mention I bought this from a different person than was on the title. So I get home and it was dated back in 07. Great i thought I just pissed away $500. I have sat on the truck for two years thinking about just keeping it for parts. Today I tracked down the original owners and they said they would sign the new papers for me to be able to get a title. Cool. I will have to pay for the title twice at $95 each plus $25 tax. I am okay with that.

Part II- I have been looking for a SWB 4x4 for a little bit but I have been running across this ad for a swb 4x4 frame. I called the guy today and he said he is taking off the axles and springs first. No big deal as I can use what I have off of the long bed. Everything else stays. Fuel and brake lines, power steering box and pump. Nothing cut off when he takes it apart. He wants $150 for the frame. So after he sends me the photos of it. I might go either this weekend or next to pick it up. This is going to be a project but I have quite a bit of parts to put one together. I will have to find a bed though. I will be taking this truck apart to build the short bed 4x4. Thought I would share. Kind of made my day.

Re: I think I have my next project lined up.

I did buy the truck for $500 but I thought it was nice for $365 I have another short bed. And it is a 4x4. I will have to wait until my C10 short bed build is done before I can start pouring alot of money into it. I can however start getting the other one tore apart and getting things together and ready.

LOL! I never even thought about those fenders. I do like the color combo though. I will have two 85's here shortly. Now all I have to do is find an 85 K30 cab with title and I can put my K30 together and will have three 85's.

Re: I think I have my next project lined up.

so that's where all the 85's went . i just found out i missed out on my uncle's 87 silverado that looks identical to the one in you're pic, color combo and all. i have'nt seen it in years but, my cousin said it had rust and a blown brake line. the guy they sold it to drove it away for $500 bucks. not happy

Re: I think I have my next project lined up.

Alright guys, I picked up my SWB 4x4 frame today. I have some questions so bare with me. I was told this was an 86 frame but the front frame looks different than my 85 K10 long bed. Look at the frame ends and also the core support mounts. They are different. There is also some crossmember supports missing so if any of you have any pics to show me how many go in there and where. Someone cut them out. Third things is the rear shock mount holes. The drivers side hole is a bit wallowed out. The passenger side you can see for your self they welded a plated on the outside frame. The inside pic looks like they blew a hole in it with a torch. I am contemplating cutting those sections out and replacing them with the ones from the long bed. Thoughts on that?

This frame is going to need more work than I thought but hopefully it won't be too bad. Can anyone tell me why the front frames are different. In the pics the orange frame is the short bed and I show both frames and the differences.

Re: I think I have my next project lined up.

1st pic is holes blown into frame where I think the cross support was. Then a pic of the frame showing all the supports gone. 3rd is the truck I will be transferring everything from. Last is how I started my morning.

I had a guy repack all the wheel bearings about a year ago and the whole hub and wheel came off as one. I think he forgot to put the kotter pin in it because it look like the nut just backed itself off. To end the day I borrowed my brother in laws trailer and when I got back one of the wheel bearings went out. Good thing I was in the town I live in when they went bad.

Re: I think I have my next project lined up.

the frame horns are different because it is a frame from an older truck, 73-80 used that style frame horn because of the different bumper

here is a pic of my 75 you can see the frame is the same as your swb frame

the 67-72 frames also have closed ends. Better check into it a bit more.

Re: I think I have my next project lined up.

Great that is all I need. If indeed it is an earlier frame then maybe I just need to cut down the long bed frame. Well the frame being something other than what it was supposed to be would go right along with the rest on my weekend. Nothing went right.

Re: I think I have my next project lined up.

That frame needs some work, but doesnt look too bad. It needs a few small repairs, but nothing major and you can get rid of that orange paint. It looks like it came with some poly engine mounts... not all is lost.

Not sure what you are thinking... Ive done framework before and it can seem as simple as making a cut and throwing down a bead, but its not. The strength of a cut frame highly depends on how you perform the cuts, prep and the skill you posess in making strong welds. The frame you purchased doesnt appear bent or unusable, just needs some simple repair. Repairs that wont in my opinion affect structural integrity or put other people at risk. To mount the newer model bumper on the older frame will not be that hard, plus you have all the measurments right in front of you on the longbed. Not to be mean either, but thats pretty scary that you didnt check the trailer over before using it and packing bearings is not a hard task.

Re: I think I have my next project lined up.

measure about 16 times, cut once, dont just make a straight cut, put a step in it so its easier to put back straight, nice hot clean bead, fish plates inside and and outside
