Anybody have a detachable steering wheel?

Just wondering if anyone here has a detachable steering wheel on their truck? Thought it might be a good theft deterent as well as look different also. If anyone has any pictures or info on how to do this and keep the factory steering wheel that would be great....

Re: Anybody have a detachable steering wheel?

Yes, all I have to do is remove the horn button and remove the large nut holding the steering wheel on. (sorry - I couldn't resist...)

You pose a good question - and it WOULD be a good theft deterrent in some instances, maybe - but, do you see yourself carrying a steering wheel around the mall with you when you leave the truck in the parking lot? That would rapidly become a deterrent that is seldom used, and probably only in your own driveway at that. Many other more subtle deterrents are out there.

While I have no PERSONAL knowledge of this(!), a removed steering wheel is only a set of vice grips away from being stolen anyway. So I doubt it would really be that much of a deterrent in reality on second thought. Gotta say, I don't think much looks better than the steering wheel it was born with unless the truck is a one-off custom piece of art. (I include other gm truck wheels in that "born with" mantra - do like the available 3-spoke knockoffs with the cushion grip that we see retrofitted on these trucks fairly often). That's just my 2 cents - and that and a buck won't even get you a cup o coffee these days.

Re: Anybody have a detachable steering wheel?

I want the quick release steering wheel mainly for when I go to car shows. Thinking it'll be something different than the norm taking the wheel off and leaving it in my seat.

Re: Anybody have a detachable steering wheel?

IIRC Grant made a steering wheel disconnect kit that had a locking cap for the stub shaft. Wonder if anyone ever bought one much less used it beyond the first week. Kind of like detachable faceplate/pull-out radios it seemed like a good idea. But then so did AMC Pacers to someone.

Any NASCAR team can hook you up.As far as that goes any local race team from the roundy round track could.A tilt wheel is probably a better option for getting in and out.

Re: Anybody have a detachable steering wheel?

I have the Grant lock system also, but I do not have the locking cap or the key.
Grant said if I give them the code on the back of the lock part I can order the replacement key and cap.
