1964 Chevrolet C10 2WD SWB

-Problem: Shifter through the floor moves freely side to side, thus, allowing it to fall out of gear.

-Source of problem: Shift linkage brackets are not secured due to previous owner's modifications (v8 sbc swap.)


Solution: Fabricate a bracket to hold the shifter in place!

I made the bracket to bolt into the two holes on the shift linkage bracket and to anchor onto the crossmember.
-Here is what I threw together:

Here is the general shape of the bracket after I had it welded together and before I drilled the holes. I just purchased a MIG welder a few weeks ago and I am using up the flux core wire that came with it, so the welds AREN'T VERY PRETTY! But hey, as long as they hold, it's alright. Right? Take a look:

The transmission doesn't fall out of gear anymore, but boy, does it make a lot of gear noise!

Now, I'm a beginner, but shouldn't the crossmember be supporting the transmission?



Kinda looks like the pinion angle is a little too high...

The wheels and bumper are a little rusty.
-Should I take a good ole wire brush and a can of primer and rust-oleum to them, or take them to get sandblasted and powder coated?



It really isn't a bad looking pickup!

That is a really nice 64. If it were me, I would have the wheels sandblasted and powder coated if you are going to keep them for at least two years. It is more money but they will last longer.

Took a little spray paint to the wheels and rear bumper to dress it up a little and an oil, trans, and differential fluid change never hurt!

great way to mask off a tire. loved it


acetone gets overspray off of tires pretty well for those "oops" moments

easily ground off all of the paint from the rear bumper with a wire brush on a right angle grinder. couple coats of primer and a couple coats of gloss. it's not the prettiest bumper but i'm on a bit of a budget on this one.

I have not painted any wheels in a long time but the last time I did I rubbed dishwashing liquid on the tire let it dry, paint the wheel and when the paint dries just rinse the soap off.

yea i just heard about the playing cards idea and had to try it!

If it had a muncie 3 speed originally, it would have been installed with the bellhousing that had the frame mounts. So they wouldn't have used a transmission crossmember. The autos did use them as well as alot of other standard transmissions.
