Re: 6 lug conversion to 5 lug on 69

Main reason people do this is to put disc brakes up front. I did it to my 69, you can see the details in my build thread. You don't have to convert to 5 lug to have disc brakes as you can order the parts to do it with and keep your six lug set up. I wanted to run Cragar SS or Torque Thrust II (which I went with) wheels and don't care for the 6 lug versions of those wheels, they just don't look right to me. (my opinion only)

Disc brakes are superior to Drum brakes when it comes to stopping power but plenty of people run drums are just fine with them. I ran them for 3 years on my truck.

Ps. Welcome to the board!

Re: 6 lug conversion to 5 lug on 69

Hey - Welcome to the board form SE TN.

To be quite honest, there's not really a 'reason' to do it IMO. It all really depends on what you want from your truck and what your plans are with it. The truck of the year on the main page of this board is a 6 lug.

Most people (me) converted to 5 lug to open options for wheels. They just don't make as many off the shelf wheels for 6 lug as they do 5x5 pattern. It's easier to get 5 lug disc stuff (they do offer 6 lug disc now) and 5 lug vs. 6 lug for dropped spindle applications. Also most aftermarket kits that lower and covert to discs will come 5 lug, .. but you can get 6 lug too.

Bottom line to give more options for a more performance oriented truck. IMO, if you're not going to lower it and/or change to custom wheels (thinking 20's or custom offset billets ).. there's no real reason to do it.

My GMC was a 6 lug drum truck with a booster and it would stand you on your nose. IF I were running cones with it, I'd want 4wheel discs and suspension modifications.

It's just budget and your plans for it. .. just my take on it.

Ok thanks guys. I am restoring the truck it will not be a daily driver and I have a set of the factory rallys so I was thinking of just getting drum equipment and doing the booster to make them power brakes I do want to lower it but then it would just be springs.

Re: 6 lug conversion to 5 lug on 69

I know this is an older thread, but I'd like to revisit if I could. I just bought my first classic truck - 1970 c10/CST. I want the 5 lug for the wheel options, and I plan to lower it. I'm totally confused on what I actually need to get. I searched and I think maybe I'm just not trying the right word or combination of words. Is there a thread with a kind of "how-to" on this?

You can use factory parts or a kit.
The front track width increases and you need to address the rear as well.

WOW!!! I really got some more research to do.
I can't afford some of these conversion and lowering kits.

Another heads up on the 6 lug wheels, is most that are designed for newer trucks don't have a large enough pilot hole in the rim to work on the early trucks.
