Crewcab 4x4 help

What would have to be done to turn an 80's crewcab dually into a short bed 4x4? I know there's info out there on the long bed to short bed conversion, but not much in the way of the 4x4 conversion. Were there any crewcabs produced that were 4x4 from the factory that I could try to track down as a starting point? I had originally intended on finding a Suburban 2500 4x4, but those are pretty rare in the below $3k price bracket. At least up this way. I figure a crewcab dually is easier to find and I can sell what parts I don't need to purchase what I do need.

Here's the final goal:
Seating for at least 3 adults
Enclosed area for carrying groceries in bad weather
4wd to prevent getting stuck in bad weather
Enough cargo space to carry around engines or fenders or such
Ability to tow about 6,500 pounds

you have to change crossmember in the front for 4x4 convers have to change rear ends shorten frame. add spring hangers in the front, i personally think you should try and find a crew 4x4 to start with be cheaper in the long run

Re: Crewcab 4x4 help

Ask this over in the 4x4 section and you'll probably get more replies on the 4x4 swap part. There are a bunch of us over there that have done it. Good luck on your project. 4x4 Crews are cool!

Re: Crewcab 4x4 help

They made 4x4 crews in both dually and srw, not sure if there was a factory short box. But long boxes are out there.

Here is one that I saw for sale.

Looking for one in the 80's is a lot easier, I wanted a round eye and it took me 2 years of searching to find a 79 or prior crew dually 4x4.

Re: Crewcab 4x4 help

A short bed was only a 1/2 3/4 and 1 ton was long beds only.

Re: Crewcab 4x4 help

I have a 4X4 crew cab, they don`t seem to be very common around here. You can convert a 2wd, but it will take some time and money. Do you need the Dana 60 front axle or can you make due with a 10 bolt or Dana 44. If you don`t need a 60, or a Dually you can save some $$ by using a 3/4 ton for a donor.

Re: Crewcab 4x4 help

I'm thinking it'll be best for me to spend the time and energy trying to find a 1-ton 4x4 crew cab single wheel to start from. It's not the easiest thing to find, but they are out there as I'm finding out.

My fallback plan is the dually 4x4 and hoping that there's someone out there willing to swap axles and beds with me so that we can both do conversions on the cheap.

I did find an old towtruck crewcab dually, but I'd imagine taking the tow bed off would be a nightmare.
