Bad speedo gear at transfer case????

Newbie needing help. My 72 4x4 np 205 transfer case is not turning the speedo cable. Cable is new and turns fine. is it normally the gear that goes bad or the speedo input shaft that spins on the gear? where can I get replacement parts? Thanks in advance.

Re: Bad speedo gear at transfer case????

If the 205 is turning the cable, then your speedo head is bad. If the 205 is not turning the cable, then the plastic speedo gear is bad or missing. Also, make sure the speedo cable is completely seated into the speedo head. Some tranny shops still carry speedo gears for these trucks, but I had to get one from a local dealership.

Re: Bad speedo gear at transfer case????

Thanks for the response. speedo works when powered by drill, so must be gear issue. I thought these 72 and older 205 transfers had metal speedo gears? Anybody know anything about that?

Re: Bad speedo gear at transfer case????

IIRC both the drive gear and the driven are plastic. Did you try and turn the driven gear with a pocket screwdriver? Is the cable engaging the gear?

Re: Bad speedo gear at transfer case????

Thanks for the response. Finally decided to just take it apart and look. Found out that the shaft that hooks to the speedo cable is broken at the top. The speedo shaft is actually metal! Not sure how the tip got broken off, but did find a new one on e-bay for 14.99 shipped. Once it gets here i will re-install and see if the actual speedo gear is ok. Thought I would have had a lot more responses than what I received???? Thanks to those who did

Not more responses because not a lot that can go wrong with a speedo cable that can't be figured out with a little poking around. The more technical the question, the more responses you typically get until the collective board feels that the question has been adequately answered. Glad you found the problem.
