Re: Engine de code ??
I think the usual sources will provide the info.
NastyZ28 http://www.nastyz28.com/sbchevy/sblock.php has become pretty much the go to source for small block casting numbers and suffix codes. According to their list the casting number on the back of the block should read 3720991 I've found that if the engine is in the truck it's fairly easy to hold your digital camera (or phone) with the lens aimed at where the number is to get a photo of the number rather than trying to stick your head back there to see it. This is a bare 350 short block in my garage but you can see where you will find the casting number behind the left head by looking at the photo. There are several identifiers for the tri 5 V8's including the fact that they will not have the three bolt holes for the side mounts. The side mount bolt provision started in 1958.

Re: Engine de code ??
I know in 55 the 265 didn't have an oil filter boss but I don't know about the 56.
