Easiest way to replace a door hinge pin?
The top passenger hinge pin broke. My door was starting to sag, and then it gave away all together, and was only held by the bottom hinge.
So, I found a good replacement hinge at the yard today. I was thinking if I just replaced the pin that the replacement hinge came wit, it might be easier than the whole hinge. Any tips for how to do this, or do I need to just replace the entire hinge? The truck I got it from was missing the front fender. I really hope I don't have to remove the fender to replace the hinge... Posted via Mobile Device |

U can change just the pin but it might be tough to dO on. You don't need to remove the fender to get the hinge off. Get after it. Shouldn't be that tuff either way

Easy to change if you take the whole door and hinge off together. Don't forget to mark the location on the door jamb and get some help. These old doors are heavy. Once the assembly is off, you can change the pins with no sweat.

Re: Easiest way to replace a door hinge pin?
just replaced the pins and bushings on my driver door. wasn't hard at all but did have to take the door off of the hinges then drove the pins out, new pins and bushings in and re-hung the door.
It didn't make the difference I hoped for on my doors but if yours is broken then it is an easy fix for $10 |

Re: Easiest way to replace a door hinge pin?
Yes, much easier to replace the whole hinge but not bad to do pin and bushings.

Re: Easiest way to replace a door hinge pin?
If it is bad enough to have fallen apart, I would replace the whole hinge. I have seen them worn so badly the the bushing was totally gone and starting to wear out the hole that it fits into.

Re: Easiest way to replace a door hinge pin?
Thanks for all the help guys. This was a giant pain in the a$$. Wow, you wouldn't think it, but it was on par with something like maybe changing the dash pad.
I decided to just replace the whole hinge and pin. The best way was to unbolt everything from the hinge on the door side, and then remove the door. Then I could get easier access to the bolts on the body side of the hinge. By the way, this is a two man job. Notice I said MAN. Somebody needs to hold the heavy door, while someone bolts it on. Adjusting the door to shut was a real pain. I ended up having to buy a new set of wrenches at harbor freight, so I could gain access to the body side bolts, once the door was on. Here's the wrench I got Anyway, it's all buttoned up and works great now Posted via Mobile Device |

No cherry picker...did you do the work in a garage? With exposed rafters? Those cheap ratchet straps, or a come-a-long, over a rafter help w/the weight. Then all you gotta do is move it into place. I've even used a tree branch w/no garage. Play safe....don t. .... |

Re: Easiest way to replace a door hinge pin?
When I take the doors on and off, I use my motorcycle jack under the door with a block of wood. I can set the height exactly where I need it and roll the door into place. Makes it a reasonable one-man job.

Re: Easiest way to replace a door hinge pin?
I used a cooler with a blanket folded up on top of it to get the right height and the wife helped balance it until I got a couple bolts in.
They are heavy for sure. I find myself checking the space around everyone else's doors. I have yet to see one with perfectly even space around the door. I have come to realize that its just one of the many characteristics of our trucks. I picked up a new inner front fender yesterday at the Myrtle Beach car show. I haven't looked it over yet, but I'm hoping I can leave the outer fender and hood in place and not remove all that to swap it out. The old one is rusted out directly below the battery.

Those are good ideas on how to do it without a helper.
