How to avoid Dmv Fees on my plates...

Can anyone help me i had my truck a friends shop for about three years and never put the truck on the " non op" at the dmv well my good friend the shop owner pasted away last year in may.. r.i.p. but now im trying to get the truck running i went down to the dmv and they want me to pay 1000 dollars of plates .

Does anyone have an idea how i can avoid that please help me....

I don't know about cali but most states your stuck paying if its tagged in your name no matter if its being drove or not.

not in Tennessee, I let all mine expire while I was out of town. new tag's start'n at the curent month, all they ask is has it been driven.
I cant amagine live'n in California with all there law's ?

Make an appointment and explain the situation to the person at the counter. It's a crap shoot, but I've heard of some folks having good luck getting fines reduced with this method.

What have you got to lose?

in nc you just tell them the trucks was not running and at a shop and they drop the fees and start your tag at the current month

sell the truck to your wife or even your self, here in Ohio, all you gotta do is print a business card and you can sell the car to said business and put it in its name, doesn' even have to be real. [<done that before]

title just has to change hands to lose those fee's

its the same in texas i just say it hasnt ben driven and bam start at the current month talking about it my tags are actually out right now!! lol

yep same in MO, I had a car down for several months, almost a year, they just started the current month... I did still pay property tax on it..

Thanks, I feel better now. No property tax or 'intangible tax' on vehicles in California.

X2 I've let them set for 1 1/2 to 3 years then go to the courthouse and $24 and I'm out the door. Yep $24 per year, I love it.

Go to the DMV and ask for a "statement of facts" form and get the dead guy to sign it saying that it was parked at his property for the entire time the tags were expired. Most of the time they will waive at least half of the fees. You must be super nice to the person at the counter so they will cooperate.

§9557. (b) Any person so mailing an instrument for payment of any fee may file with the department a certificate in writing showing compliance with the provisions of this section. The certificate shall be accepted by the department as prima facie evidence of such mailing.

Late registration penalties are quite severe and may amount to 180% of the original fees. These fees do not have to be paid if the original payment was lost in the mail.

For this one you will need to fill out the STATEMENT OF FACTS at BOX H (the box with all the lines) with the sentence

** All fees were placed in the US Mail before the due date and the vehicle is exempt from late registration penalties.**

If you are loopholing multiple years be sure to have a separate form for each year. The form should be signed by whoever put the fees in the mail. You can also write the above sentence on a blank sheet of paper with a date and signature at the bottom. Under the signature write the sentence

**I Certify under penalty of perjury under the laws of the State of California that the information entered by me on this document is true and correct.**

This one is so obscure it never fails to flabbergast the clerk. Be persistent, demand a supervisor and you will get your way, EVENTUALLY!!

here in Utah, we usually get a letter from the DMV a few months after our plates expire. I ignore them, but generally the State is wondering about insurance. Our plates don't stay with the car and we are liable for them, so it's a good reminder to take off the plates if it's going to be out of service for a long while, or if it's sold. I would do the 'sell it to someone and then buy it back' thing if it were me.

It would have never been an issue if you had paid the $10 non op fee from the start. I have a 69 CJ-5 that I non opped 13 years ago. I get a renewal notice every year asking if I want to renew the registration. If I do, it's $36. If not, I pay nothing. California laws are no big deal if you are responsible and do what you are supposed to do. I can't tell you how many trucks I have bought DIRT cheap and parted out because folks don't non op them. All it takes is $10 and no headaches.

I'm quite sure the PRC would send notification via US mail to this effect. NOT.

It's a "Gotcha" game. The whole point of this non op bull is to remove older vehicles from the road. Sell them to out of state buyers.
