LQ9 power

So I'm planning on putting a LQ9 in my '57 SWB. I was planning on striking, but a couple people have said it's no worth it. So those of you that have done a 6.0 swap, what kind of power do you get stock? How about with L92 heads, a cam, and a LS3 intake? Anyone go all the way with a stroker?

Sorry for asking but wasn't having any luck searching.

Re: LQ9 power

Look on the ls1tech forums. You will find tons of info.

I would say go for it. My brother is putting one in his Nova. lq9 with a cam, ported heads, and an intake.

Re: LQ9 power

I've been looking at LS1tech and it's tough to find out what parts people are using for rotating assemblies. Most I've seen are around 2K.

Re: LQ9 power

I have a LS3 block. It has a Callie's crank with Callie's rods and Weisco pistons. It runs ok..

Re: LQ9 power

LQ9 is an awesome engine as well as LQ4. I swapped a LQ4 in 84 c10 with no complaints. Don't listen to other people's negative ideas. Try our lsx forum. Plus if it wasn't worth it, why would there be so many LS swaps?

Re: LQ9 power

If you are going to stroke it and swap all those parts out just start with an lq4. same basic parts but a decent bit cheaper. Main differences between the two are the dished vs flat pistons which bump up the compression.

Re: LQ9 power

HotRod built an LQ4 with L92/LS3 heads, cam, longtubes, and it made right around 550 at the flywheel.

That's my same basic setup + turbo. Shooting for 700+ rwhp.

I saw another guy with a cam and ported/decked heads on a lq4 making 450 at the flywheel.

How steetable do you think that setup will be? I'm trying to pick a cam for my 6.2 that will have a TVS1900. I'm leaning toward something that will have a somewhat smooth idle and still be able to run a stock converter in my 6L80E. Thoughts?

The LQ4 and LQ6 are the same block. The only difference was the pistons giving the LQ6 a higher compression ratio.

Have you driven the 6L80E? I found a low mileage one out of a Camero. Are you using a stand alone controller?

That is a PLENTY streetable setup. I put that exact same cam in an LQ4 that went in my brother's Monte SS. Comp Cams XR281HR, 228/230, .571"/.573" - 112 LSA Has a nice chop to it, and makes good power. It's got a 4L80E with a 3400 stall 9.5" converter in it. Not sure how it would do in a 6L80 with a stock converter?

That's what I was considering except keeping the fuel injection with a LS3 intake. If I start with a new block there isn't much difference in cost for the rotating assembly.

This is the LQ4 with the stock 317 heads. Plenty of torque off idle...haha. Shreds the tires at will by just flat footing it off idle...and it's only got a 3.42 gear in it. Granted, the converter helps a bunch....but you should not be lacking any off idle torque with the twin screw.

LQ9
Sounds nice and seems to have plenty of power. The 6L80 I'm looking at came out of a 2011 Camaro so the converter should be decent. Surprisingly the 6L80 doesn't have a lower first. It splits 3rd an 4th and has an extra overdrive.

Re: LQ9 power

Actually the 6l80 does have a low first

Gear: 6l80e - 4l80e
First: 4.02 - 2.48
Second: 2.36 - 1.48
Third: 1.53 - 1.00
Fourth: 1.15 - 0.75
Fifth: 0.85 -
Sixth:0.67 -

Re: LQ9 power

Those are different than I saw. Doesn't really matter. There is no standalone controller. It needs to interface with a Gen IV wiring harness. Huge difference in parts cost if I go the used route.

I love my 4l80e but I want 2 more gears....I think I could be on the freeway at like 900rpm

Re: LQ9 power

I thought about it for the swap I'm going to do, but I've read that they don't handle the power as well and its 10x more of a pain in the a$$ to connect them.

My thoughts exactly. I found one cheap with 15,000 miles out of an 2011 Camaro. Spent the afternoon reading about them. Have to interface with a Gen IV wiring harness and I couldn't find anybody that made a normal shifter for them.

Re: LQ9 power

If you can find one paired with an l92 it would work just fine but obviously those are a lot.more expensive too. Not to mention it still doesn't handle the power. If you're just looking for MPG though it would be great.

Re: LQ9 power

I have a 4L80E because:

1) Cheap as dirt on craigslist or in the boneyard

2) Easy as pie to tune them with EFILive or HPT

3) My 80e with a good converter and minimal mods will handle anything I can throw at it, and get me home again.

Same here. I had a fresh 4L60E and sold it to put a used 4L80E in.

I would not trust a stock 6L80E behind even a mildly built LQx.

That being said, an easy recipe for a 500+fwhp LQ9 is:
799 heads, MS3 cam, F-body accy's, LS6/FAST intake and LT header of your choice.
