Re: motor change
Just a guess, 85 C-10, a fair thought would be a 305 engine, with a TH350C tranny and a set of 3.08 gears. That was a pretty standard combvination for those years of trucks.
The TH350C tranny is a non-overdrive tranny with a lock-up converter, which can be recognized by the electric plug connecting on the side of the tranny, just above the oil pan on the driver's side of the tranny. If you can, it would be a good thing to move on to an OD tranny for the mileage gains, but that would mean gettng a little steeper set of gears, such as 3.42 or 3.73 gears. That would make the 327 a snappy engine. The 3.08 gears and an OD tranny does not work well if you have any type of hills to drive daily, th e RPMs are too low for keeping the engine in it's power band.

Re: motor change
Price depends on how much you get the parts for.You need the trans the kick down cable and bracket the trans crossmember a new drive shaft and regear the rear end because of the over drive gear.I forget the year but they put the 700r4 in these trucks i think like 86 or earlier.

Re: motor change
Use the left side mph pick the fastest speed limit around you then pick a gear size and your rear tire size. Then it gives you the rpm at that speed if your trying to get max mpg around 2k rpm is best or lower.

Re: motor change
If its a true 327 with early heads, your biggest issue will be no accessory bolt holes on the heads and getting all of your engine front bracketry installed and working.

Re: motor change
Change heads or drill holes, if the 327s would allow them to be drilled. Final thought, don't add the accessories that the later vehicles would have.

Re: motor change
Not to sound like a jerk but try and find out what you have before you ask questions. It really helps alot and takes most of the guesswork out of it. You'll get a much better answer if you have more information when asking the questions.

Re: motor change
i hope someone responds to this, as i am not getting very many responses to my posts, but i wanted to ask about the noise coming from my tranny. i already posted a thread but got no responses. i have like a clicking and grinding noise coming from my tranny. the weird thing is though, when the sound stops momentarily, the speedo needle bounces around. it getting progressively worse so i kinda need to know what it is. if someone has any idea what it could be please respond to this. thanks to anyone who has any ideas.

Re: motor change
Before I said the trans is eating itself, I'd unscrew the speedo cable from the trans and drive the truck. I'd bet his noise goes away.

Re: motor change
No, it can't hang down into the trans. But if the noise coincides with the speedo jumping around, you've got a speedo drive or cable problem. Just unscrew the cable from the trans and go drive it and tell us if the noise goes away.

Re: motor change
Why not drop a 350 crank in whe your rebuilding? You get a 327 block 350 engine. The rear will spin the tires with even a 305 so posi traction is your next thing you need. A th350 with a transgo shift kit and rebuild will handle most "built" small blocks
