1962 Slow Start Project
So, I got this truck from my wife's family. Her grandfather bought in new in 62/63. It has been sitting for the past few years neglected so I am looking forward to restoring it to its formal glory. He had installed some heavy springs on the rear and put a 350 in it.
So far I have just been doing some stop gap maintenance on it. - New battery after it ran out of gas picking it up. Thank goodness for the sign waiver and jogger who help push roll it the last 20 yards of the 75 my friend and I pushed. Heavy SOB! - New oil and filter - General cleanup. Glass, moss on front, spider webs, dash, etc. - Removed "push" bar, convex mirror, and broken dash tach - Flappy Wheeled surface rust and primed. - Some other rust proofing on interior Overall this is a food truck. It needs attention but drives just fine. I have discovered some hidden rust in door lower and hood so I am pretty positive there are some more surprises to come. Next steps are to continue removing surface rust and priming and a little engine work. Also, making plans for what this truck will eventually turn into after some time. It as to wait since we just had a baby. Hoping later this year I can get into. In the meantime I like to share Pic of its first night here: After Some of the work was done: Posted via Mobile Device |

Nice Start, Enjoy! Interesting exhaust, do your plans include keeping it?

Re: 1962 Slow Start Project
Looks like a decent truck to start with. Plus it has family history.
Enjoy! Glenn

Re: 1962 Slow Start Project
Welcome. Nice looking 62. I agree with you on the exhaust pipes. Also...removing the grill guard did wonders for the front end. Keep up the great work.

Re: 1962 Slow Start Project
Got a little time to work on some rust prevention.
Some not so good stuff up here. Glad I got to this now. Obviously some pitting. Not the worst I have seen but still not good. This should help until I can get the cab blasted. Going to scrub out the channels with a wire brush and then spray the clear rust prevention stuff in there. Some light rust all taken care of and covered. Re: 1962 Slow Start Project
So my neighbor just happened to have a front end from a 72/73 truck in his back yard. He wanted it gone so now it is mine. I think free is a good price
Looks to be in decent shape. A good blasting and powder coat should make it look new! Now I just need to research the swap and decide on and upgrades! Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: 1962 Slow Start Project
Thanks for the link. I have been doing some research but have more to learn.
Would you guys say this is a 71-72 or a 73-87? Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: 1962 Slow Start Project
I did the same swap, but I brain farted at the parts store, and go the ball joints for a 66, and not the year of the donor front end!!
I was a very time conusming more than costly mistake.

Re: 1962 Slow Start Project
Flappy wheeled the passenger side and sprayed some primer so truck looks like a grey cow instead of a rust bucket now!
Removed the stacks so it should roll into the garage now (when there is room)! Also, picked up a Edelbrock Performer 3701 intake for 75 bucks! Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: 1962 Slow Start Project
Took a pressure washer to the truck. Got some old stuff off of it. Finding a lot of the issues as I slowly go through the truck. Still knee deep in research mode and planning the build. I do have a new v-belt coming this week so that will be nice to get on. Nothing all that monumental but engine does look better

Re: 1962 Slow Start Project
It's always nice to see a family truck saved. And it looks like a very nice truck to start with. Nice progress, keep up the good work!

Re: 1962 Slow Start Project
Originally I was just holding on to the truck to get it from deteriorating further while some family stuff got worked out...
I am super excited that as of yesterday the truck is officially mine The part list has been growing the past few weeks as I have been planning out what to do with this guy. Still a bit more research to do but I am starting to come to a conclusion as to what will be done and when! I do have one project to finish first though (1975 Honda CB550) This is how it started awhile back: And this is where it is now: |
