Short vs Long Water pump for SBC ??

I have a 1967' C10, and I am doing SBC conversion from inline 6, to SBC 350.

What is the reasoning for a Short vs Long water pump?

If i am not mistaken it depends on alternator brakets and power sterring and pullies, things like that for the water pump to line up but i might be way off base here, some one else here will know for sure though.

Re: Short vs Long Water pump for SBC ??

No idea. But gm used the short on trucks up to 72 and long on 73+ trucks. You can use either but beware! Each has different brackets/pulleys for everything! So use whatever pump you have all the brackets/pulleys for. Trust me, swapping from one to the other can get expensive fast. I used a 350 out of a mid 70s truck and had ps and ac for short set up so had to track down/buy all the correct pulleys/brackets for the other stuff.

If you are not worried about being period correct, go with the long water pump. Brackets and accessories are MUCH easier to find, including serpentine setups if you eventually go that route.

So based on my Pulley & bracket set up.

All that I have currently is still on the Inline 6, engine, is there any chance that those would work?

It's been a while, but the Water Pump pulley may work. I would go with a SWP set-up. It will look correct and all components could be swapped to any future SBC swap.

Sounds like it's time for a junkyard run to pull everything you need off another 350. I don't think much if anything tranfers from I6 to sbc. I bought a 100% complete blown pontiac 350 because I had no parts at all for my pontiac motor. Paid $250 for complete 69 subframe/motor (I needed subframe too). I'm going to save a ton with everything I got.

Re: Short vs Long Water pump for SBC ??

Since you are swapping from a 6 to a v8, you can place the engine in the big block location, use a serpentine kit (long water pump) with fan and all with a big block shroud. You have to redo the exhaust and everything anyways, so setting the engine back an inch or 2 from the standard small block location won't be a big deal. Another thing, if you can find some big block stands you could also use some later model exhaust manifolds, unless you plan on headers

Re: Short vs Long Water pump for SBC ??

As stated before..long water pump brackets are easier to find in the boneyards. Chevy cars like camaro , chevelle ,full size chevs all used the long pump from 1969 up...big blocks were different though.
