Top Repair

My top is in need of some desperate repair. The edges have multiple chips.

The top looks like the PO ran the edge of a DA and took some chunks out.

It also looks like the fibers are showing on top.

What should I do about the top of the top where the fibers are showing? Do I need a skim layer of fiberglass or can I prime over it? Or thin coat of bondo?

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Re: Top Repair

Evercoat Fiber Tech works realy well, and is made for SMC. Theses tops are not fiberglass they are sheet molded composite (SMC). It worked real well on my top for all the chips and pot holes.

I actually used 3M 05883 Rigid Parts Repair Kit made for SMC for all the large chips on the edges, it worked pretty well with some cloth mat mixed in.

I'm still not sure what to do about the areas on the very top where you can see the fibers. Is that what you're calling "pot holes"? If so, would the Evercoat Fiber Tech be thin enough to spread over that large of an area?

Thanks,
Matt

Re: Top Repair

I filled the cracks and holes with the Evercoat product then shot it with u-pol raptor liner.

I have a small missing piece in the top gutter above the drivers window. Do you think either of these products would work to repair this?

Re: Top Repair

I would think so. I put it on a little to thick to accommodate for my lack of confidence in smc repair, which results in a ton of extra sanding. Good luck.

Re: Top Repair

I ended up putting a light coat (what I would call "skim coat") on the entire top to fill all the small holes where the fibers were showing. LOTS of sanding ahead. I'll try to update as I go.

Re: Top Repair

I'm pretty poor at bodywork, but I did get done sanding. The edges where i had to use mat actually turned out really well. It was surprisingly easy to work with the epoxy. I dropped it off to get painted today. I'll post some pics when I get it back.

Re: Top Repair

Did you take some pics of the repair for the chip that's missing? I have a single wall with a pretty good size chunk missing where it bolts to the bed. I'm wondering how I might fix it.

Re: Top Repair

I had the same problem, I used a short section of angle iron clamped to the missing area and laid sections of fiberglass mat with mixed resin to match up with existing rail, two to three layers. When dry I removed the angle iron and started sanding, not noticable at all after painting. I'll post pics if I can find them.

Sorry, I didn't take any pics of the chip repair during or after. I didn't use the angle iron on the backside like bentblaver recommends. Sounds like it would've saved me a great deal of sanding on the backside of the repair though.

It's getting painted hopefully this week. I'll try to remember to post pics when it's done.

Re: Top Repair

Picking up the top tomorrow. I'm assuming all the rubber will need to be replaced around the edges. Is there rubber across the front? Mine doesn't have any, but I'm sure there was supposed to be some there.

I'll post some pics tomorrow.

Re: Top Repair

Yes, most of the vendors here sell all of the seals, LMC catalog has some good pics of the breakdown of the placement.

Zolatone was the name of the textured paint. My uncles shop sprayed it on. It covered up a ton of imperfections. Then sprayed a semigloss white on top of it.

Zolatone is nice stuff. Oil base - water base and ink if I remember right. Do not stir!

Fiberglass will work, I used it to rebuild my top and did some extensive repairs. I had to use two hatches to make one then shot it with Al's liner. Will try to post a link with some pics: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=438402
