Re: Need help sbc 350 wont start
is it getting enough gas
try using a cleaned out plastic pop bottle, poke a hole in the cap, squirt in carb use it to supply gas see if it keeps running....then check lines and filters

Re: Need help sbc 350 wont start
This might sound a little crazy but due to it happening make sure all your cables on your battery are tight and didn't come lose and then check your ground too.

Re: Need help sbc 350 wont start
It's not getting something, spark (at the right time), fuel, and compression is all it takes for a motor to run (not necessarily well). Something is missing somewhere.

Re: Need help sbc 350 wont start
Since you just had the carb apart look for signs that something isn't right fuel wise first.
Are the plugs wet with gas/fouled black? This would indicate too much fuel, the float needle might not be sealing or the float set to high allowing gas to spill out the top of the bowl and run down inside. Needles could be set wrong, generally most carbs will idle with the screws about 2 turns out from seated. Might not run good, but it will usually start and run. If you pour a little gas down the neck does it at least try to hit a few times and maybe belch a little black smoke? The needle might be stuck in the seat or the float set to low and no fuel is getting in the bowl. When you pump the pedal do you see fuel squirting out the accelerator pump holes? If not there is no gas in the bowl for one reason or another. Did you install the filter the right way (Quadrajet?) They only flow one way. If you pull the hose off the pressure side of the fuel pump do you get any gas when cranking? If you do get gas out the pressure line, but no gas out the accelerator pump holes there is for sure something wrong with fuel getting in the bowl of the carb (filter, needle, plugged passage, something). If no fuel comes out there is either no fuel available to the pump, or it is not pumping anymore, the diaphragm dried out and ripped. A dry fuel pump diaphram is not uncommon if it's been sitting a while. Has it been sitting a while? Is it possible you just have bad gas? |

Re: Need help sbc 350 wont start
Sounds like it is really flooded, maybe a bad carb rebuild. Or could just be flooded really bad.
Safe way, take the plugs out and let it sit with them out over night. Hillbilly way, take the plugs out, take a lit propane torch and light each cylinder hole until dry and no poof. Be careful here, keep an extinguisher handy. Works even better if someone turns the motor over a bit while doing this. Then try to start it up after doing one of the above. If it runs, great. If it fires up and runs ****ty, we can then isolate the problem further.

Re: Need help sbc 350 wont start
I have an 85 and have a similar problem it turns slowly even with a new battery and a 50 amp charger on it and I have weak spark. I have replaced the plugs, wires, distributer cap, rotor all the electrical components for the distributor. including the pickup coil and its still weak.

Re: Need help sbc 350 wont start
What's wrong with the timing chain? Is it broken or the gear stripped?

Re: Need help sbc 350 wont start
I was going to say check your timing, like was posted, all an engine needs to run is Spark and fuel, but the spark has to be at the right time. If you getting fuel and getting spark and still no run, then the only thing left is timing. That sounds like what you discovered.

Re: Need help sbc 350 wont start
i have a 305 sb and it was working fine but i needed to change my intake manifold so i did and it started up but when i would put in gear now it sounds like if it wants to turn off and kinda shaky? and i had to take the rotor back off to tightened the intake more on the back and i tried putting the rotor exactly back were i took it off but now the engine sounds kind of rough when it starts could that be due to timing? or due to maybe some water getting into the engine due to the intake being loose?
