230-250 CI Air Cleaner

Hello:
I am new to this forum and I need your help. I have restored a 1946 Willys CJ2A, a 1951 Suburban CarryAll and a few 1985 Chevy K-10's. I recently purchased a 1966 Chevy C-10 shortbed C-10 step side. This truck is really sweet and has 37,000 original miles. It was a one family owned truck. There are a couple of issues with it and I am replacing a few items with NOS parts. My objective is to keep this truck original. It is in really nice shape for the age of the vehicle.

I am looking for the correct air cleaner. The truck has a paper element filter and the top of the air cleaner was squished. It was domed. The fix that the previous owner performed was to add two 3/8 nuts as spacers and then he used a standard wing nut. I have been trying to find the correct lid and the flanged wing nut with the detents on the washer. I am not sure if this is a 230 or a 250 CI engine. My understanding is that the block and carb would be the same but the pistons are domed if it is a 250. I will find that out soon. Can you help me out please? Thank you

Re: 230-250 CI Air Cleaner

The 250 replaced the 230 as the base engine in '66, so assuming your engine is original, it's a 250. The proper air cleaner/lid looks like the one below and is held on by a cheapie stamped wing nut. I don't have a close up of the nut right now, but could get one if you need it. Oh, and welcome. We would like to see some pics if you can. Love those original low milers!

Re: 230-250 CI Air Cleaner

Hello again. That did not take long. This is the first forum I have been on. I am technically challenged and I will post pictures pretty soon. I have been having a lot of fun sending pics to salvage yards. Not many wish to get pics on their smart phones so I just learned how to send a pic from my smart phone via gmail. That wore me out. Could anybody send me a picture of what the factory correct air cleaner would look like? I know that the oil bath filter was an option.
Thank you.

Welcome! If you download the Photobucket app it will be easy to add pictures to your post. Upload them in 640x640 max pixels to photobucket using the app, then go online and copy the "image code" and paste it in your post here. It'll automaticly show up from the image code being posted.

Here's a detailed walk through of how the app works, and posting from you phone using the photobucket app. You can just pull up photobucket from your PC and use that if you're at home.

Re: 230-250 CI Air Cleaner

Hello Mr. Tin Can:
I am new at this forum and learning how to navigate. Another member sent me a picture of the '66 250 in his C-10 which happened to be the same color C-10. His air cleaner is identical to mine and it is domed. My base is fine, aside from rust, but my top was squished. It can not be straightened. Your top is also bent by an inch or so. I appreciate all your help but I need to find a top that is not bent and a nut as well. If you look at the forum the guy sent me a picture on Wednesday.
Thanks
John

John,
My 230 air cleaner was squished just like Mr. Tin Can's lid and I would say it can be probably be repaired. Here is mine after I banged it out and it will look good as new after a bit of smoothing with body filler. Just primer on it now.

Got it. How about we trade lids and I will throw in $25.00 ?!! The second time is always easier and you really enjoy fixing these!

Re: 230-250 CI Air Cleaner

Trade? I'll straighten yours for free. You just pay the postage both ways. What have you got to lose? My lid has the little disc thing on the underside of the lid. I guess it acts like a shield of some sort. I removed it so I could clean underneath and plan to tack weld it back on. This one pic shows it sitting on top of the domed part (I just set it there temporarily). Anyway, yours will need to be removed too so the dent can be hammered out.

Seriously, you can find a local body shop that will make it look good again. It took me all of 10 minutes and I've never taken lessons in bodywork. I just figured that I could make it look better than what I started with and I was right!

Here's a BEFORE PICTURE

I guess if mine's bent , it's the smoothest bend I've ever seen.

Tincan,
You might be on to something. Maybe they had 2 different styles?

If you look at my BEFORE pic below, you can see that my 1965 lid also had a nearly perfect circle area where the top was depressed. It also looked like it had been stepped on at least once LOL!. After seeing another lid online, I may have incorrectly concluded that mine had been domed. Maybe the factory had more than one design?

After seeing other lids online, I concluded that mine was originally domed (but I could be wrong). I reasoned this because after I hammered out the depressed area, the threaded rod sticking up from the carb seemed to be the proper length for a wing nut (whereas before it seemed too long).

Re: 230-250 CI Air Cleaner

the wing nut on this one, when mounted on the carb, had approx 1/2" of threads above it, is all, with no signs of having been cut off. And why would everyone cave in the tops of the air cleaners???

Either way, doesn't matter, I am by far no purist, so it'll go on a Rat Rod or something else. LOL!

I'm no purist either. I often assume things and then end up eating crow. You can see from this pic that once my domed area was pushed out, the end of the threaded rod seems to be the correct length.

Someone with more knowledge about the subject can chime in and tell us the REAL story. As for me, I'm leaving mine domed. I couldn't care either way.

Re: 230-250 CI Air Cleaner

Hello again:
It has been a long winter in Wisconsin. I blew out my ACL and had knee surgery on 3/2/13. I found a local salvage yard that thinks they may have the correct 250 CI domed air cleaner lid but I need to go hunting for it. I figured it would be much easier than repairing the one I have. I did heat the lid of the one I have in an attempt to straighten it. The results are not what I am looking for. I am a mechanic not a body man! My buddy that owns a body shop said that it can't be fixed but I think he just did not want to do it. If I am not sucessful in my quest I will send out an S.O.S.. I know I need to post some pictures and I will as soon as my college daughter help me do it. She is a way on spring break doing some Habitat For Humanity work. They will be coming and thank you for all your support and advice.

I don't know if this will help, but here is the air cleaner on my 65 230. Yes, someone cut the end off the intake tube. The lid looks very original.
