My Blazer lives again! (now with pics!)

People have been talking about the Holley TBI kits and I wanted to let everyone know that I just got one installed and it runs!

Right now the truck doesn't have any seats fastened down, so I can't take it for a tune-up drive, but I'll be doing that this weekend. If anyone is interested in my impressions of the kit, I'll be happy to expound. This is the Holley Projection 2D systems. First thing I noticed is much faster throttle response.

That's a bunch of about not being able to take it for a drive cause you don't have a seat. Be intuitive!!! hahaha....

Glad to hear the TBI worked out well

you have more self control than I do waiting to nail the seats down. I'd be driving it on one knee!

Yeah, I know it's POSSIBLE to drive on a 5 gallon pail. My biggest concern is what if I fall over? Then the truck is driving itself for a few seconds before I can get up and stop it. Who knows how much damage I could do to other people or their property in that time?

I just got it running! I don't want to have to drive it over to the body shop.

The installation was pretty straightforward except for a couple of points:

1) The pump supplied in the kit will NOT pull. I.E. It MUST be below the lowest point in the tank. That's not possible in the Blazer without hanging it 8 inches below the frame rail. This caused me to have to switch to a different fuel pump.

2) I didn't like the little plastic canister fuel filter they supplied, as it would mean busting open the fuel lines each time I have to change it. I upgraded it to a really nice aluminum screw-in type filter.

3) There's no good place in a Blazer to cut a hole in the firewall to run the wires. I wanted it to be hidden and out of the way of wayward feet. I ended up using the clutch linkage hole. I'll be keeping my eye on this very carefully for wear.

I'm in the process of tuning it right now. I'll post more when I've got that done.

Any pics of the injection on the engine? I can understand you be cautious on driving it, that would be very tempting!

Yukon,

I'll get some pics. I'm happy that with the air cleaner in place it's really hard to see there's not a carb there.

Mark, I got mine on eBay for just over $600. Summit sells these for about $795 I think.

I'll take some pics this weekend guys.

Today I got it tuned up.

One word -- WOW!!!

This thing has awesome power!

At first I couldn't get the idle set -- I'd play with it and play with it, but it always seemed like it wanted to be richer, and it was running really rough. Sort of reminded me of a vacuum leak. Hmm. Okay, in fact, carb cleaner proved it WAS a vacuum leak. Wrong gasket between the adapter plate and the intake.

15 minutes later it idled like a champ. My engine may not be the best example -- built by Dumb & Dumber Engines Inc (the previous owner), but it was pretty touchy getting the idle set right. Also, it says to set the main mixture by holding the throttle at one spot and richening it until it starts to bog down, then back it off. Well, at full rich it hadn't started to bog down. At idle, though, with the indicator set this way, I couldn't get it lean enough to not spit gas out on the driveway. So, I set it further down and I'll tweak it as I go.

Pics tomorrow and a longer test drive!!

Okay, here are the pictures I promised. I've been driving it all day today and it seems to run great. Still smells a bit rich, but I think I'm going to pick up a rich/lean indicator to help me nail that.

#2. On the passenger side you can see the two electrical connectors -- the front one controls the injectors and the rear one is the throttle position sensor.

#3. The antidieseling solenoid is actually used by the computer to prevent exessive rich conditions when rapidly going from power to idle. Also notice the temperature sensor almost squashed under the radiator hose. I'll be monitoring this to see if it causes problems.

#4. Here's a good shot of the tb itself with the stock riser on it. As you can see, it sticks way up into the riser. If I didn't have it, the injectors would be right up in the air cleaner. Not very tall.

#5. Here's just the throttle body by itself. All in all, I'm happy with the installation, but if I did it again I'd run the fuel lines up behind the engine to clean it up a bit. On the other hand, that would be harder to trouble-shoot.

#6. Last one. If you were an angel dancing on the head of my fan shroud, this is the view that you'd get. That black line running around the throttle body is part of the TBI wiring harness. For some reason they put the antidieseling solenoid in the same bundle as the TPS wires, but then put the fuel injector wires and tach wire in a SEPARATE bundle. Not sure why they did that, but I suppose that could be altered if one were man enough.
