Re: 4 bolt or 2 Bolt

500hp go for four bolt. Under that the two bolt is fine.

Re: 4 bolt or 2 Bolt

You can tell from the pictures that it is a 4 bolt main block. I would have no issues pushing a studded main 2 bolt into the 400 to 500hp range, but for anything over that you should be using an aftermarket block anyways.

Re: 4 bolt or 2 Bolt

Okay, see I didn't know how to tell the difference between them, or how to tell the difference I looked up the vin on it and it showed that it could be a 2 or 4 bolt and I figured someone here could help me out better.

Re: 4 bolt or 2 Bolt

Look at the main bearing caps. (The three center pieces) It has 4 bolts. A 2 bolt main will only have 2 bolts.

Re: 4 bolt or 2 Bolt

Okay I see it, so what would I need to pull off on my motor to find out if my current motor is a 2 or 4 bolt?

Re: 4 bolt or 2 Bolt

Look for four bolts on top of the main bearing caps tlawre87 said.

EDIT: I saw you other thread about pitting a cam in a 305. Is the motor you trying to figure out the the main bolt number a 305 or 350? Most 305 are two bolt. There are some rare 4 bolt 305s though according to some people.

Alright thanks for all the replies guys!! I'm going to look into it pretty soon, can I do it with the motor still in the truck or do I need to have the motor out?

Re: 4 bolt or 2 Bolt

It can be done without pulling the motor, but you may have to loft the motor up a bit and you might not have to. Not much help but thats just the way it goes sometimes haha.

Re: 4 bolt or 2 Bolt

I have seen several 2 bolts pushed to 600hp and I'd take a splayed 2 bolt over a for bolt any day. I always thought that was a funny subject. But to the subject question yes it's a 4 bolt which for a street motor is irrelevant. But if you plan to do something with this where you get something extra is the fact that that block is a high nickel/high tin content. Just my .02

Okay but these 2 bolts are they splayed like you mentioned or are they actually just the 2 bolts? My truck is mainly going to be for show and to pull my boat, but if I can push good power out of a 2 bolt I'll just keep the 2 bolt in there

Re: 4 bolt or 2 Bolt

Just a 2bolt, and if you are not building a 500+ high rpm race motor than a 2 bolt will do any show or boat pulling you plan to do.

Re: 4 bolt or 2 Bolt

Yeah, I'm just going to try and build a really good bottom end and have good torque and just let the HP follow it. If I want splay it, where can I get that done?

Re: 4 bolt or 2 Bolt

Just google splayed main caps and which ever one you decide on just take them with the motor to who have do the machine work and they can install them or you can purchase from any machine shop.
