Got a real starter problem; need help please

I have a 71-c10 w/400 engine that has a new pulling cam and new heavy duty fly wheel. Bought it 5 months ago and it had a new starter. It lasted about 4 months and then had to buy another like it. It lasted about 1 month and then sheared the gear that connects to the fly wheel. Someone told me to get a 1996 C10 starter which I did and after a month it has gotten to the point that regardless of how it is shimmed, it just will not work. Will connect to the fly wheel maybe one out of 40 tries. Anyone have an ideas?

Are you using the right starter bolts. The ones with the knurled shoulder. And do you have a starter brace on the end.

What does your flywheel (manual) or flexplate (automatic) ring gear look like?
