ok now lets clear this up. i have a 454 in my wrecker ran goog but i dont have it on the road as of yet so she sits for months on end. got it going the other day and she ran great. rev up no back fires didnt load up. couldnt ask for more. then i started her up the next day and now she wont stay runing under 2k rpm and it keeps going up and down to the point she wants to die. thought it was the holly that i had on it so swapped it out for a eld 600. starts better but still the same thing. up and down. i have tryed to tune the carb no luck the timing is set at 8* and i have added new gas. my father is starting to get on my ass about this truck so i need to get it going right

Re: 454 wont ideal

Sounds like it could possibly be a vacuum line somewhere, you might check those. It clears up after 2000 rpm? Or is it still having hiccups in the 2k+ range?

x2

Sounds like a bad vacuum leak. Check all the vacuum lines to make sure none are hard or cracked and that all the ports on the carb & intake are capped or connected.

Did you use a new carb base gasket? Hard to know if a used one is causing problems with internal passages between Holley & Edelbrock so a new one is a good place to start if you reused the old one.

I know my Edelbrock carb came with a steel base plate for under the carb that it needed to cover some intake variations where standard carb gaskets didn't have any support. You could need one of those to make it work right too.

Re: 454 wont ideal

Also with the one day good, next day bad and wasn't running for a while. Could have been rust in the tank and plugged something in the carb. Carb bowls can dry out too and get debris in them, maybe some of this plugged something.
